St. Thomas Aquinas on Teaching and Education Lee, Kyung-Jae (Baekseok Univ.) St. Thomas Aquinas’ main idea on education, though he had never written on that subject independently, could be collected from his several writings. From the 11th question of Quaestiones Disputatae de Veritate and the 117th question of the first part of Summa Theologiae in which he focuses his attention on the concept of teaching, we can infer his overall understanding on education. His pedagogical doctrines also could be found in his sermon Puer Jesus, where he preaches concerning growing up and maturing. The key concept that lead the whole discourse is the idea of ‘to teach’(docere). To teach, according to St. Thomas, is to cause knowledge, especially to cause knowledge in others, whereas to cause knowledge in oneself is an act of learning, which is nothing other than ‘to come to know’ or ‘to understand’. To teach is primarily a matter of producing knowledge. But in virtue of man’s intellectual nature, to teach, as to cause knowledge, could not but being related to each and every aspects and branches of his life, including his pursuit of happiness. In the meanwhile, St. Thomas insists that only God alone can be a true teacher in its fullest sense of the word, that is, no other than God can be a sufficient cause of whatever knowledge. In this respect, to teach is not only an act of causing knowledge but also an divine guidance unto God Himself by way of revealing and making Himself understood.

토마스 아퀴나스는 교육을 주제로 하는 독립된 글을 남기기 않 았다. 하지만 그의 저작들에서 교육과 관련된 중요한 기본 원리들 을 찾아볼 수 있다. ‘가르침’에 대한 논의를 중심으로 전개되는 󰡔진 리에 관한 토론문제들󰡕 제11문과 󰡔신학대전󰡕 I부 117문의 논의로 부터는 교육에 관한 그의 근본적인 이해를 추적해 볼 수 있고, 그 의 설교 󰡔아이 예수(puer jesus)󰡕에서는 교육이 인간의 어떤 측면 들의 성숙을 지향해야 하며, 이를 위해 어떤 태도들이 요구되는지 에 대한 일종의 교육학적 논의들을 발견할 수 있다. 이 논의들의 중심에는 그의 가르침 개념이 자리잡고 있다. 그에 의하면 가르침이란 지식의 산출, 특히 자신 안에 지식을 산출하는 배움 혹은 인식에 대응하여 자신 이외의 존재 안에 지식을 산출하 도록 하는 원인행위이다. 이러한 가르침은 우선적으로 지식 산출 과 관련되지만, 이해된 선만을 추구하도록 되어 있는 인간의 본성 적 행위방식 때문에 사실상 인간 삶의 전 영역에 영향을 미칠 뿐 아니라, 인간의 궁극적인 자기실현과도 연관된다. 한편 그는 오직 신만이 참된 의미의 교사, 즉 지식산출의 충분한 원인자라고 강하게 주장함으로써, 가르침의 의미를 교육현장의 차 원을 넘어 보다 근본적인 지평으로 확장한다. 이 지평에서 볼 때 토마스 아퀴나스가 말하는 가르침은 단순히 지식을 산출하는 원인 행위가 아니라, 인간들에게 자신을 드러내어 알게함으로써 그들로 하여금 그들의 본성적 행위방식에 따라 그들의 궁극목적이자 행복 인 신 자신에게로 향할 수 있게 해주는 신의 부르심, 인간들을 자 신에게로 이끄시고 인도하시는 신의 부르심으로 이해될 수 있다.
