This is to clarify the Christian counseling on a metaphor. A metaphor as a kind of communication is to compare between psychological situation and other similar situation.
When a client has a great psychological trauma, it is very easy for clients to make a disclosure of their inner situation through a metaphor indirectly. Application of a metaphor to Christian counseling is very important. Metaphor makes a client to avoid resistance in counseling situation. Also, it is a good method to understand a counselee effectively.
The researchers dealt with notion including definition of a metaphor, interpretation of a metaphor, a metaphor in the New/Old Testaments, and a metaphor through narrative in this paper. Also, there are contents of therapeutic functions of a metaphor in this research.
A metaphor has a lot of functions including simplicity of communication, similarity of situation, effectiveness of expression, and indirectness of exposure.
Accordingly, applications of metaphor to Christian counseling is a very significant method not only for secular counseling but also for Christian counseling.

본 연구의 목적은 은유의 활용에 대한 기독교상담의 적용방안을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 상담학적으로 은유를 이해한다면 은유는 내담자가 가지고 있는 심리상태를 어떤 유사한 다른 상황에 비교하는 의사소통의 한 유형이라고 볼 수 있다. 내담자의 고통이 크면 클수록 의사소통은 직접적이 아니라 간접적이어야 한다. 기독교상담은 내담자의 흩어진 이야기를 한데 모을 수 있도록 도와주어야 하며 기독교공동체의 이야기들과 연결점을 찾는 일이다. 그런점에서 은유는 기독교상담에서 활용도가 매우 높다고 본다. 은유는 내담자가 간접적으로 자신을 드러내며 저항을 피해갈 수 있으므로 상담자로 하여금 내담자를 이해하고 분석할 수 있는 좋은 방법이 될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 은유의 개념이해, 은유와 해석, 성경과 은유, 은유와 이야기를 살펴본다. 은유의 활용에 있어서 치료적 기능은 유사성, 간접성, 감정영역의 촉진으로 분류하여 언급한다. 따라서 본 연구는 은유를 기독교상담에서 적용한다면 내담자가 자기 문제를 표현하는데 매우 효과적이며 심리적으로 두려움을 효과적으로 극복할 수 있으리라 본다.
