This study is conducted to describe Park's personality as an authoritarian type through examining his attitudes, behaviors, and other's statements on him. To describe Park's authoritarian personality, the concept of authoritarian personality developed by Robert A. Altemeyer is used. The authoritarian personality is identified as the covariation of three attitudinal clusters: authoritarian submission, authoritarian aggression, and conventionalism. Authoritarian submission means a high degree of submission to the authorities who are perceived to be established and legitimate in the society. Authoritarian aggression means a general aggressiveness, directed against various persons, which is perceived to be sanctioned by established authorities. Conventionalism means a high degree of adherence to the social conventions which are perceived to be endorsed by society and its established authorities. As the result of this study, Park's personality appeared to be an authoritarian type. It is well known that an individual's personality conditions his political attitude and behavior patterns. The authoritarian personality is identified as being undemocratic or antidemocratic. Thus, considering the relationships between the authoritarian personality and political behavior, it is a truism that the authoritarian leader is disposed to seek an undemocratic or antidemocratic system.

본 연구는 박대통령의 행태나 그의 주변인들의 그에 대한 언급 등을 통해 박대통령의 성격에 대한 연구를 위해 행해졌다. 박대통령의 권위주의 성격을 살펴보기 위해 로버트 알티미어(Robert A. Altemeyer)에 의해 개발된 권위주의 성격의 개념을 활용하였다. 알티미어에 의하면 권위주의 성격은 권위적 복종, 권위적 공격, 인습주의란 세 가지 공통된 행태를 모두 보이는 것으로 규명되었다. 권위적 복종은 그 사회에 확립되고 정당화되었다고 인식되는 권위에 대한 높은 정도의 복종을 의미하고, 권위적 공격은 다양한 사람들을 향한 것으로서 확립된 권위에 의해 비준되었다고 여기는 일반적인 공격을 말한다. 그리고 인습주의란 사회나 그 사회에 확립된 권위에 의해 지지되었다고 인식되는 사회적 인습에 대한 강한 집착을 의미한다. 권위주의 성격의 특성에 비추어 박대통령의 행태를 분석해 본 결과 박대통령의 성격은 권위주의 형태로 나타났다. 개인의 성격은 그의 행태를 결정짓는다는 사실은 잘 알려져 있다. 권위주의 성격은 비민주적인 성향으로 파악되므로 권위주의 성격과 정치행태의 관계를 고려해 볼 때 권위주의 리더는 비민주적 체제를 추구하는 성향이 있다고 할 수 있다.
