This article reconsiders the possibility of the union and unity of the Korean Presbyterian denominations which has a history of numerous divisions among them. Though it is desirable that the divided churches are re-united, it is not an easy task to accomplish that goal. Thus the most important thing in this situation is to secure a consensus of opinion all would agree. The Korean Presbyterian denominations made attempts to be re-united after they were divided in the 1950s, and yet their efforts were nullified. Their failures at the time the divisions were recently made gives us a valuable lesson: their unity requires both ‘denominational or political union’ and ‘doctrinal agreement.’ The attempt made between Koshin and Hapdong in the early 1960s failed because of the absence of the 'denominational unity' despite of the 'doctrinal agreement' among them. The attempt made between Hapdong and Tonghap in the late 1960s also failed because of the absence of the 'doctrinal agreement' despite of their 'denominational unity.' In addition, the possibility of the unity between Kijang and Tonghap is very rare though they share 'doctrinal agreement' concerning WCC movement. Thus the author suggests some ideas as follows: 1) A consensus concerning the concept of 'unity and agreement' should be made among Korean Presbyterian denominations. 2) The 'doctrinal agreement' based on the Presbyterian tradition should be preceded. 3) Any political discords reside within the church should be rooted out. 4) Each denomination need to pay attention consistently to other denominations. 5) Any offensive word or action which could stir others’ emotion should be restrained.

한국 장로교회는 1950년에 분열을 경험한 이후 재결합을 시도하였으나 무산된 경험이 있다. 분열된 후 얼마 지나지 않은 시기의 그들의 실패가 주는 값진 교훈이 있다. 교단적 결합은 반 드시 ‘교단적 또는 정치적 연합’과 ‘교리적 일치’를 요구한다는 것이다. 1960년대 초반의 고신 측과 합동 측의 경우는 ‘교리적 일치’에도 불구하고 ‘교단적 연합’이 불가능하였다. 1960년 후 반의 합동 측과 통합 측의 경우는 ‘정치적 연합’에도 불구하고 ‘교리적 일치’가 이루어지지 않 아 실패하였다. 더욱이 요즘 에큐메니칼 운동을 중심으로 기장 측과 통합 측이 ‘교리적 일치’ 를 보이고 있으나 ‘교단적 연합’의 가능성은 희박하다. 그러므로 필자는 다음과 같은 몇 가지 사항을 제안한다. 1) 한국 장로교회의 ‘연합과 일치’라 는 개념에 대한 일치된 이해가 있어야 한다. 2) 장로교회의 전통에 근거한 ‘교리적 일치’가 선 행되어야 한다. 3) 장로교회 내의 다양한 교단 정치적 갈등이 제거되어야 한다. 4) 각 교단은 서로에 대한 지속적인 관심을 가져야 한다. 5) 타 교단의 감정을 상하게 하는 언행을 자제하여 야 한다.
