Buddhism is a religious belief, which is, in general, assumed to be absolute and unconditional. However, the religious belief in Buddhism is presumed as the process for purifying a blemished and marred self. Or rather, it is the process of awakening and realizing that the human being is the intact, complete and inherent existent. Based on this point of view, the faith and reason in Buddhism could be explained as an act to do with awareness, not as an condition or an object to choose and obtain.
Buddhism is the gateway to the Nirbā�ṇ�a, or to the Buddhist path of liberation, while we observing Virtue, and taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the spiritual community, known as the Saṃha.
Convincing benevolence and compassion of Buddha, and taking refuge in 18 incomparable powerful abilities of Buddha-daś-balā�ni, 10 abilities of wisdom, catur-vaiś�āadya, 4 abilities of fearlessness, triṇ�i-smṛ�ti-upasthā�nani, 3 abilities of invincible firmness, and the great ability of compassion - the faithful can be gradually a enlightened one who has gone through 8 phases of spiritual transformation and has attained 5 virtues of ultimate truth. All of this process are demonstrated in detail with sapta-triṃ�śd-bodhipakṣ�a in Sũ�tra Aham.

불교는 하나의 종교에 속한다. 일반적으로 종교적인 믿음을 절대적이라고 한다. 그러나 불교에서의 믿음은 오염된 자기를 정화해 가는 과정이라고 한다. 아니 애초에 오염된 존재가 아니었다는 것을 추구하여 확신하는 것이다.
그런 점에서 불교의 믿음이란 우리가 선택해서 가질 수 있는 하나의 상태나 대상이 아니라 뭔가를 해야 한다는 어떤 행위인 것이다. 즉, 불교의 믿음은 계와 부처님과 부처님의 가르침과 부처님의 거룩한 제자들을 의지하여 열반에 이르는 과정이다. 이러한 과정은 부처님의 18불공법(不共法)에 의지하여 자비를 확신하면서 아함경에 설해진 37조도품(助道品), 신앙적으로 말해서 오분법신(五分法身)을 체득하여 사향사과(四向四果)를 이룬 성자가 되는 것이다.
