Music pedagogy can be defined as a science using music educationally while musicology is a science researching for music. Music pedagogy is still a budding field of study. Therefore there are many challenges in music pedagogy to be researched yet.
It is very important to cultivate music pedagogic thought for teachers instructing music. Because music educational thought is essential for being a good music teacher. To cultivate music educational thought theoretical approach toward music pedagogy is required first. With this point in mind, this study considered music pedagogic research arranged by German music educationist Nolte and research cases about music teaching and instructional methods arranged by American music educationist Colwell to understand what fundamental structure is made for music pedagogy as an independent field of study. Their description on the structure of music pedagogic study might be very theoretical, however it is thought that it would leave place to make people who research music education think deeply through those theories.

음악학이 음악을 대상으로 연구하는 학문이라고 한다면, 음악교육학은 음악을 교육적으로 다루는 학문이라고 정의할 수 있다. 음악교육학은 아직 신진 학문 분야이다. 그러므로 음악교육학 영역에서는 아직 연구하여야 할 수많은 과제들이 산재해 있다.
음악을 지도하는 교사들이 음악교육학적인 사고를 기르는 것은 매우 중요하다. 그 이유는 좋은 음악 교사가 되기 위해서는 음악교육적인 사고가 필수적인 요소이기 때문이다. 음악교육적인 사고를 기르기 위해서는 먼저 음악교육학에 대한 이론적 접근이 요구된다. 이러한 점을 염두에 두고, 이 논문은 음악교육학이 하나의 독립된 학문 분야로서 어떠한 기본적인 구조를 갖추고 있는 지를 파악하기 위하여 독일 음악교육학자 놀테(Nolte)가 정리한 음악교육학적 연구와 미국의 음악교육학자 콜웰(Colwell)이 정리한 음악 교수 및 학습 방법의 연구, 그리고 한국의 음악교육학적 사례들을 고찰해 보았다. 이들의 음악교육학적 학문의 구조에 대한 설명은 매우 이론적일 수 있지만, 이러한 이론을 통해서 음악 교육을 연구하는 이들에게 학문적으로 깊이 생각할 수 있는 여지를 제공해 주리라 생각한다.
