Despite the growing popularity of situational crime prevention, until recently the situational perspective has paid very little attention to sexual crimes. Sex crimes have been traditionally thought to involve offenders who are mentally disordered and who are driven to offend by irresistible psychologically forces. Situational factors were thought to play very little role in their crimes. However, it is argued in this paper that opportunity and other situational factors are just as important in sex offences against children as they are for any other crime. This paper reports findings of a major study on convicted child sex offenders (Smallbone and Wortley, 2001; Wortley and Smallbone 2006). This study shows that many of the popular ideas people have about sex offenders are false. Few sex offenders are mentally disordered and situational factors play a significant role in offending. It is suggested in this paper that for the purposes of investigation and prevention, the situational crime prevention model can be helpful when applied to the problem of sexual offences against children.
