The purpose of this paper is aimed at investigating Counterargument on Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene centering around Denis Noble’s The Music of Life. Dawkins’ view can be abstracted 'gene centered view' that is elucidated animal's behaviour and evolution from a gene's point of view. His standpoint that studies the relation of animal's behaviour and evolution stipulates a unit of the highest priority of natural selection as gene. According to his view, alterity that does beneficial behaviour for the other also thinks of selfish gene's operation behind this argument. Also, at the ground of this idea proceed from 'biological determinism' that reduce human's social behaviour to biological characteristic and determinated human's nature by gene. Ultimately, this thought comes down to 'radical reductionism'. The problem is what 'biological determinism' which seeks the objectivity of science is qualified really for the fairness of science. Contrarily, Denis Noble that is a great scholar of system biology in British Oxford University argues life's phenomena looking for holistic and integrate view of point not gene. His main point is that biological determinism is identified gene with life is not correct biological mechanism. According to his view, life is a process and a way of expression of behaviour which consists of complex network. From this context, this paper is focused on following aspects. First, I will show that Dawkins’ standpoint is not consistent. In the process, I will be discuss a point in dispute and counterargument on ESS(evolutionally stable strategies), meme gene and extended phenotype. Secondly, I will show that Denis Noble's macro and integrate system biology is much stringer than micro reductionism and gene-centered theory. In other words, human's felling, consciousness, memory and personality etc can not be explain mere by a property of gene. Consequently, human's nature can be understand through 'dialectical interactionism' between biological character and cultural character.

이 글의 목적은 데니스 노블의 ‘생명의 음악’을 중심으로 도킨스의 ‘이기적 유전자’에 대한 반론을 탐구하는 데 있다. 도킨스의 견해는 동물의 행동과 진화를 유전자의 관점에서 해명하려는 ‘유전자 중심적 견해’로 압축될 수 있다. 동물 행동과 진화의 관계를 연구하는 그의 입장은 자연선택의 최우선 단위를 유전자로 규정한다. 그의 견해에 따르면, 타인에게 이타적 행위를 하는 이타성 역시 그 논의의 배후에는 이기적 유전자가 작동한 것으로 생각한다. 또한 이러한 생각의 밑바탕에는 인간의 사회적 행동을 생물학적 특성으로 환원시키고, 인간의 본성은 유전자에 의해 결정된다는 ‘생물학적 결정론’에서 비롯된 것이다. 궁극적으로, 이러한 생각은 ‘극단적인 환원주의’로 귀결된다. 문제는 과학의 객관성을 추구하는 ‘생물학적 결정론’이 정말로 과학의 공정성을 갖추었는가 하는 점이다. 이에 반해, 시스템 생물학의 석학인 영국 옥스퍼드 대학의 데니스 노블은 생명 현상을 유전자가 아닌 전체적이고 통합적인 관점에서 바라볼 것을 주장한다. 그의 주된 핵심은 유전자를 생명과 동일시하는 생물학적 결정론은 올바른 생물학적 메커니즘이 아니라는 것이다. 그의 견해에 따르면, 생명은 하나의 과정이며 복잡한 네트워크로 이루어지는 행동의 표현 방식이다. 이러한 맥락에서, 본 글은 다음과 같은 점에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 진행한다. 첫째, 도킨스의 입장이 일관적이지 못함을 보일 것이다. 그러한 과정에서, (도킨스가 주장하는) ‘진화적으로 안정된 전략’, ‘밈 유전자’와 ‘확장된 표현형’에 대한 문제점과 반론이 논의될 것이다. 둘째, 데니스 노블의 거시적이며 통합적인 시스템 생물학이 미시적 환원주의와 유전자 중심적 이론보다 더 설득력이 있음을 보일 것이다. 달리 말해서, 인간의 감정, 의식, 기억 그리고 인격성등은 유전자의 속성에 의해 설명될 수 없다. 결론적으로, 인간의 본성은 생물학적 특성과 문화적 특성 사이의 ‘변증법적 상호작용’에 의해 설명될 수 있다.
