In this study, we investigated the meaning of educational authority, and we will discuss the educational authority of Peters through teachers' personal experiences in real classrooms. Peters defined the educational authority as the legal force to influence students, and he divided it into three types. Three of which formal authority, expertise of the authority(an authority) and authority as the position(in authority) is. The authority which teachers are delegated from the formal rights is called formal authority. Expertise of the authority implies seriousness about the format of the knowledge that includes passion as well as content knowledge. Thus, Peters emphasized that teachers do not have eternal authority but provisional authority. Authority as the position means to apply the method of authority in order to maintain students' order. Authoritative Teachers need to apply their educational authority from when the students are controlled by authority until when they reach autonomous level without any authority.

이 연구에서는 Peters의 교육적 권위의 의미를 탐색하고, 교사들이 교실에서 교육적 권위를 느꼈던 경험을 통하여 Peters의 교육적 권위가 교실 현장에서는 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. Peters는 교육적 권위를 교사로 하여금 학생들에게 영향력을 행사할 수 있도록하는 정당한 힘이라고 정의하였으며, 유형별로는 형식적 권위, 전문 지식의 권위(an authority), 직위상의 권위(in authority)로 구분했다. 형식적 권위는 교사가 위임받고 있는 형식상의 권리를 의미하고, 전문 지식의 권위는 지식의 형식에 대한 진지함, 즉 교과에 대한 지식뿐만 아니라 교과에 대한 열정까지 포함하는 의미이며 교사는 영원한 권위자가 아니라 잠정적 권위자임을 강조하고 있다. 직위상의 권위는 교사가 학생들의 질서를 유지하기 위하여 권위의 방법을 적용하는 것이다. 권위 있는 교사는 학생들이 권위에 의한 통제에서 권위 없는 자율적 수준에 이르도록 필요한 순간까지만 그들의 교육적 권위를 사용해야 한다.
