In this essay the author attempts to relate the literary and oral nature of homiletic language with the essential understanding of preaching beyond practical matters. Preaching, prepared and performed through the human language, cannot cross over the boundary of human linguistic activities in spite of sermon's theological meaning, its relationship with God's Word. The most important linguistic aspect for the preacher is its instrumental one needed to prepare and deliver sermon. This instrumental aspect of language appears as the forms of orality and literacy. The preacher wrestles with these two forms of media. The problem is that the preacher faces a dilemma in the midst of that wrestling: preaching is fundamentally an oral act or event, but the preacher spends most of his or her time for sermon on literary activities; and these heavy literary activities do not guarantee the successful performance of oral preaching. Previously suggested solution for this dilemma is to make the literary sermon preparation as close as possible to orality; to minimize the role of literary process; or to eliminate the literary preparation all together. These solutions assume that preaching is such an oral act as that the literary process is a necessary evil or at best an expediency for oral result. Against this assumption, the author suggests a different claim and approach. The author argues that the relationship between literacy and orality in preaching should not be viewed as a derivative or expedient one, but as a disclosing way to manifest the inevitable quandary emerging from the nature of Christian theology and the limit of human existence. For this claim, the author critically relies not only on the past and contemporary sermon theories, but also on philosophical, theological hermeneutics and criticism, and especially media ecological analyses. The conclusive understanding and suggestions, however, are given from the perspective of practical theological reflections.

본고에서 필자는 설교언어의 문어적 성격과 구어적 성격을 설교의 실제적 문제를 넘어 설교의 본질적 이해와 연관시켜 보려 한다. 인간언어로 준비되고 실연되는 설교는 설교의 신학적 의미 곧 하나님 말씀과의 관련성에도 불구하고 여전히 인간의 언어적 활동의 한계를 벗어날 수 없다. 설교자에게 중요한 언어적 영역은 설교를 준비하고 전달하는 데 필요한 도구로서의 측면이다. 언어의 이 도구적 측면은 구어와 문어의 형태로 나타난다. 설교자는 매번 언어의 이 두 가지 미디어 형태와 씨름하는데, 문제는 이 씨름 가운데 설교자는 딜레마에 봉착한다는 것이다. 설교는 근본적으로 구어적 행위 내지 사건임에도 설교자는 설교를 위한 대부분의 시간을 문어적 활동으로 보낸다는 것과 이 문어적 준비가 구어적 설교의 성공을 보장하지 않는다는 사실 때문이다. 이 딜레마에 대한 종래의 해결 시도는 주로 설교의 문어적 준비를 설교의 구어적 결과에 최대한 근접하게 하거나 문어적 과정의 비중을 최소화하거나 아예 제거하는 방식이었다. 이 같은 접근이 전제하는 것은 설교는 근본적으로 구어적 행위이며 문어적 과정은 필요악이 아니면 고작해야 최소의 방편에 불과하다는 생각이다. 이에 대해 필자는 다른 전제와 접근을 제시하려고 한다. 필자는 본고에서 문어와 구어의 관계는 하나가 다른 하나의 파생물이거나 방편이 아니라 기독교의 본성과 인간실존의 한계로부터 오는 불가피한 문제를 드러내는 방식이라는 관점을 제시한다. 이를 위해 필자는 과거와 현대의 설교이론만이 아니라 철학적, 신학적 해석학과 비평이론, 무엇보다도 미디어생태학적 분석에 비판적으로 의지하여 논지를 전개한다. 그러나 최종적으로 실천신학적 관점에서 문제를 정리하고 실제적 활용원리를 제시하려고 한다.
