This paper aims to examine comparatively respective hair accessory of modern Korean and Japanese women emerging according to their social class. This comparative research shows that a strongly distinctive difference in women’s hairstyle in the Chousn era and the Edo era respectively tends to appear, specifically, with regard to their social spheres. In contrast to the similarity of their clothing culture detectable since the ancient time due to being culturally heavily influenced by China and geologically situated within Northeast Asia, Korea and Japan respectively had quite a different hair accessory culture. For while upper-ruling class women in the Chosun era formally made their hairstyle upwards by wearing a Gache-styled wig and informally downwards by being pulled back into a bun, those in the Edo era formally made their hairstyle downwards by being untied and informally upwards. By extension, the aforementioned difference in hairstyle can also be taken into account in connection with types of cloths and ways of wearing them. Therefore, it is likely for me to infer that upwards hairstyle could be considered effective, given that Japanese women’s hairstyle in the Edo era was designed mainly to emphasize the beauty of the back of women’s neck by making it shown externally while wearing clothes.

본 논문은 한일 간 계급별 여성의 두발 장신구를 비교 연구한 것이다. 한일간 두발장신구를 비교해 보면, 두발양식에서 상이점이 두드러짐에 따라 장신구의 모양과 용도도 차이가 나타나고 있다. 같은 동아시아권이고 중국의 영향을 받아 고대부터 비슷한 문화적 특성이 있었던 복식문화와는 달리 두발문화에 따른 장신구는 다른 형태를 지니고 있었다. 조선의 경우 신분이 높은 귀족이나 사대부가 의례용으로 머리를 높게 가체를 하여 높은 머리를 하고, 거기에 떨잠, 첩지와 같은 신분을 나타내는 장신구를 붙였고, 일상용으로 사용한 쪽머리를 비녀로 고정시킨 반면 에도시대의 왕족과 귀족은 의례용으로는 머리를 풀어 아래로 늘어뜨렸으로 조선에 비해 예장용 장신구의 사용이 다소 적은 편이었고, 오히려 일상용 머리인 업스타일에 장식적인 고우가이, 간자시, 구시등의 장식을 하여 차이점이 드러나고 있다. 이는 의복의 형태 및 착용방법과도 연관 지어 생각해 볼 수 있다. 일본의 머리형의 경우 의복을 착용할 때 뒷목덜미를 드러내고 입어 목덜미의 아름다움을 중요시함으로 업스타일과 이를 효과적으로 드러낼 수 있는 장신구를 다양하게 하는 것이 효과적인 방법이었으리라 본다.
