Alternative journalists seek to build a reality which is contrary to the dominant media's patterns of routines and expressions. According to Herman & Chomsky, the power of the mass media marginalizes 'ordinary' citizens. Downing argues that the value of alternative media lay in its potential for social and political change. This approach connects democratic communication to the political activism and radical organization. Rodriguez emphasizes the citizens' media which entail a journalism that is practiced and organized by ordinary citizens outside the institutional arrangements of the mainstream media. Chesshyre's native reporting emphasizes the activities of alternative journalists working within communities of interest to present news that is relevant to those communities's interests, presented in a manner that is meaningful to them and with their collaboration and support. What is common to those scholars is the notion of ordinary people for whom journalism is not a professional activity. The journalism thus produced adopts very different news values from those of the mass media, foregrounding as its subjects those who, in the mass media, tend only to be regarded as observers or marginal commentators on events. In conclusion, through the practice of more inclusive and democratic forms of media production, alternative journalists emphasize that the power of the media does not lie solely in the hands of professional journalists. They believe that they are able to rebalance the power of the existing media.

대안언론은 주류 언론의 관습과 표현 행태에 반하는 현실을 구축하고자 한다. 허만과 촘스키는 기존 언론 권력은 평범한 사람들을 주변부로 내몰고 있다고 주장한다. 다우닝은 대안언론의 가치는 사회･정치적 변화를 몰고 올 수 있는 그의 잠재성에 있다고 본다. 민주적 커뮤니케이션을 정치적 활동이나 급진적 조직과 연결시키고 있다. 이어 로드리게스는 주류 미디어 밖에 있는 평범한 시민들에 의해 조직되고 운영되는 시민의 미디어를 강조한다. 체스하이어는 커뮤니티 내에서 주민들의 공조와 지지를 바탕으로 의미있는 뉴스를 제시하는 언론활동을 강조한다. 이들의 공통점은 평범한 사람들에 대한 개념이다. 이들에게 있어 저널리즘은 전문적 활동 영역이 아니다. 따라서 이들이 수행하는 저널리즘은 기존 대중 매체와 매우 상이한 뉴스가치와 의외의 뉴스원을 채택한다. 주류 언론에서는 겨우 관찰자나 사건에 대한 보조적 역할을 하는 평범한 사람들을 전면에 내세워 주도적 역할을 하도록 한다. 결론적으로 대안언론은 보다 포용적이고 민주적인 형태의 미디어 제작을 통해 미디어 권력은 일부 전문 언론인의 손아귀에만 존재하지 않는다는 점을 강조한다. 이들은 기존 미디어 권력의 불균형을 바로잡을 수 있을 것으로 확신한다.
