Korean dances were divided by two genres as various Western dances were introduced in modern era. That is, traditional folk dance or court dance were classified into traditional dance and others accepted modern dance was named new genre, new dance. New dance has a characteristics of Korean feature as well as performing arts with audience appreciation as a result of performance of new creation work based on traditional dance. Therefore, this research has a purpose on investigating Korean characteristics in the Korean modern dance appeared as a dance phenomena combined by Western dance style and traditional image based on sociocultural characteristics in the process of modern dance development by Koreanology perspective not by existing dance historical perspective. This research analysed the factors of Korean characteristics appeared in the works of Seunghee Choi and Taekwon Cho who were actively performed creation work based on Korean basis in modern new dance era. As a result, their works could be analysed as they contain aesthetic consciousness such as plainness, humor, nature, artless art which are Korean aesthetic consciousness as well as external formula of the dances. So, this research has a meaning on investigating the spirit of Korean dance by analysing how identity of Korean people, Korean characteristics, is revealed.

신무용은 한국문화에 대한 안무가의 새로운 관점이 창작의 출발이었으며, 그들에게 있어서 한국문화는 하나의 소 재로서 작용하여 한국적인 모던댄스의 구상에 영향을 미치게 되었다. 그렇다면 과연 안무가의 관점에 의해 만들 어진 신무용에서 한국문화의 정체성은 어떻게 구체화 되었으며, 그들의 춤에 나타난 한국적인 특성은 무엇인가에 대한 문제의식에서 본 연구는 출발하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 근대무용의 출발점을 장식하고 있는 신무용에 나타 난 한국성의 전개양상에 대하여 신무용의 대표적인 안무가 최승희와 조택원의 작품 중 한국적인 소재를 가지고 있는 작품에 나타난 한국성의 전개양상에 대하여 도출하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 진행하는데 있어서 연 구방법은 문헌위주의 연구를 수행하였다. 먼저 한국성의 개념에 대한 한국학 연구 결과물과 예술에 있어서 한국성에 대한 연구 결과물을 토대로 한국성의 발현과정에 대한 연구를 수행하였다.
