The current study drawing on Giddens’structuration theory identifies key constructs that influence the effectiveness of knowledge and proposes a conceptual framework to explain the process of an effective knowledge management. The proposed framework consists of four major knowledge constructs: learning capability, information readiness, knowledge readiness, and implementation capability. In terms of discussion, this paper then discusses the issues regarding the design of knowledge systems for smart organizations. The contributions of this research are twofold. First, the proposed framework can be used as the basis of examining various levels of knowledge management practices, although it focuses on the organizational level phenomenon. Second, the concepts proposed in this paper such as knowledge readiness and information readiness may serve as the base for evaluating firms’knowledge level or as a precursor for the effectiveness of knowledge management.
