The objective of this article was to examine whether adolescents’ self-esteem is different according to their parents’ Christian faith and whether parents’ parenting attitude affects their children’s self-esteem.
For this purpose, this researcher selected 450 male and female students from middle and high schools in the capital area including Inchon and Gyeonggi-do through random sampling, and surveyed them using a questionnaire.
Collected data were analyzed statistically through t-test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis using SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences)12.0.
In the results of this study, first, adolescents’ self-esteem was significantly different according to their parents’ Christian faith. That is, self-esteem was higher in adolescents whose parents had Christian faith than in those whose parents did not.
Second, adolescents’ self-esteem was significantly influenced by their parents’ parenting attitude. In particular, self-esteem was higher in adolescents when their parents had a democratic parenting attitude.
Accordingly, the results of this study suggest that the Christian faith and democratic parenting attitude of the father and the mother are important variables for the development of healthy self-esteem in adolescents. Furthermore, it is considered necessary to reflect these results in Christian Counseling and parent education programs at churches in order to provide help adolescents with low self-esteem overcome their difficulties and problems actively.

본 연구는 부모의 기독교신앙 유무가 청소년 자녀의 자아존중감에 차이가 있는지, 부모 양육태도에 따라 자녀의 자아존중감에 영향을 미치는가를 살펴보고자 하였다.
이를 위해 서울, 인천, 경기 지역 내 위치한 중고등학교에 재학 중인 남녀 학생 450명을 무선표집하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그중 응답이 불성실한 65부를 제외한 총 85부가 사용되었다.
수집된 자료는 SPSS(statistical package for the social science) 12.0을 이용하여 t-test와 상관관계 분석, 다중회기분석을 실시하여 통계자료를 분석하였다.
본 연구결과는 첫째, 부모가 기독교신앙을 가지고 있을 때, 기독교신앙을 가지고 있지 않는 부모의 자녀들보다 자아존중감이 높았다. 둘째, 부모 양육태도에 따라 청소년 자녀의 자아존중감에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다.
따라서 본 연구결과는 부모의 기독교신앙과 민주형 양육태도가 청소년 자녀의 건전한 자아존중감을 형성하는데 중요한 변인임을 시사하고 있으며, 더 나아가 기독교상담현장과 교회에서의 부모교육 프로그램에 활용되어 낮은 자아존중감으로 위축된 청소년들이 겪고 있는 어려움과 문제를 적극적으로 해결할 수 있도록 도움의 필요성을 제공할 수 있으리라 본다.
