This study attempts to clarify the crossing between one's consciousness and subconsciousness. It was explored while dismantling the visual images and texts in my two video works. Each work which was started from collected map images and a product manual book respectively provided viewers to experience the continuing shift between their reading and seeing. An animated image gathering, changes one's point of view from seeing to reading, whereas the quick shift among scenes in led to the conversion of reading and seeing. 'The shiftness of reading and seeing' would also be articulated in a single channel video, by Gary Hill, in which the interaction between spoken and written texts boiled down to the linguistical ephemerality of one's subconsciousness. A french psychoanalyst, Jacque Lacan undertook the semiotic decoding of one's subconsciousness through applying 'Verdichtung and displacement' of Linguistics to his research. The shiftness between one's consciousness and subconsciousness in my two video works would correspond to the conversion of Verdictung and displacement, which after all would be nothing less than the folding of the self and the real world.

본 논문은, 본인의 두 영상작품의 분석을 통해 시각 이미지와 텍스트가 내재하고있는 의식과 무의식간의 이동을 밝혀보고자 하는 데 그 목적을 가지고 있다. 작품은 각각 지도이미지와 정수기의 설명서 를 소재로 하는데, 그것들의 내용을 파악하는 과정에 있어 ‘읽기와 보기의 연속적인 전환’을 체험할 수 있 었다. 지도 이미지 애니매이션인 는 이미지의 보는 것에서 읽는 것으로 점진적으로 변화되고, 텍스트 영상 인 에서는 빠른 순간전환으로 읽기와 보기가 하나로 융합되었다. ‘읽기 와 보기의 전 환’은 결국 우리 의식과 무의식의 상호작용이라 볼 수 있으며, 이점은 특히, 게리 힐의 싱글채널 작품인 에서 두드러지게 나타난다. 음성텍스트와 문자텍스트간의 압축과 전치는 관객 으로 하여금 언어 속에 내재된 영속성을 환기시키는데 이 점은 자끄 라깡의 기호를 통한 무의식의 구조적 해 독을 통해 보다 선명해진다. 본인의 작품을 통해 가능해진 의식과 무의식의 전환은 압축과 전치의 혼합과 같으며 그것은 결국 현실세계와 나의 포개짐에 다름 아니다.
