This study intends to examine the effect of Japanese Buddhism on Chosun and Chosun people through the education business of Japanese Buddhism within Chosun during the opening of the ports as well as the modernity of Japanese Buddhism in terms of various aspects of the modernity. It attempts to identify the flow of education business and its characteristics focusing on Jōdoshū, which started its activity in 1897. The education business of Jōdoshū was conducted on Chosun people during the opening of the ports across the country in comparison with Shinshū Ōtaniha. The involvement of Chosun supporters became conspicuous along with the spread of educational institutions of Choson as internal movement. The Japanese education business of Jōdoshū played a pivotal role in education business for Chosun people. In conclusion, the field of education business of Jōdoshū, targeting at Chosun people during the opening of the ports, is referred to as a specific modern space because it emerged as a result of interlinking of the primary goal in pursuit of the spread of believers on the side of the religious body and the desire of Chosun people for the modern education system. Meanwhile, the aspect of imperial modernity, which implies unconscious entanglement of the intention of dominator and the mind of religious people, is pointed out at the same time. Like this, Japanese Buddhism has been transformed into a modern religion in combination with a variety of modernity concepts.

본 연구는 개항기 조선내 일본불교의 교육사업을 통하여 일본 불교가 조선, 조선인에게 미친 근대적인 측면과, 이를 통해 표출되는 일본불교의 다양한 근대성에 대해 논한 것이다. 지금까지 주된 논의의 대상이었던 진종대곡파에서 벗어나, 1897년에 활동을 개시한 정토종을 연구대상으로 개항기에 실시된 교육사업의 흐름과 그 특징을 파악했다. 개항기 정토종의 교육사업의 경우는 진종대곡파와는 달리 조선인을 대상으로 각지에서 교육사업을 실시했다. 당시 조선 내부에서도 교육기관 확산의 움직임과 더불어, 조선 유지자들의 관여도 두드러지게 나타났고, 이는 일본 정토종의 교육사업의 밑거름이 되었다. 이러한 개항기 정토종의 조선인 대상의 교육사업은 교단 측의 신자확산이라는 1차적 목표와 조선인의 근대 교육 시스템에 대한 욕구가 서로 맞물린 결과로 나타난 특수한 근대적 공간으로 제공되었다고 할 수 있다. 반면 그 내면에는 지배자로서의 의도와 종교인으로서의 의식이 무자각적으로 뒤엉켜 나타나는 제국적 근대성의 측면도 동시에 확인 할 수 있었다. 이처럼 다양한 근대성이 서로 혼종되는 가운데 일본불교는 근대적 종교로 탈바꿈하고 있었던 것이다.
