This research aims to analyse the “refusal” expressions against its requests in some Japanese language textbooks. Based on this, a survey of both Japanese native speakers and Korean native speakers in order to explore the variety and timing of “awareness” of “refusal” in their conversations. On top up on the “refusal” expressions against its requests in the textbooks, the analysis follows the structures as well as the procedures of “refusal”. It finds out that some textbooks do not contain this topic at all on the other hand some emphasize communication and introduce many different patterns of “refusal” expressions. Next, a questioners about “indirect refusal expressions”, which are hard to be understood by Korean native speakers takes place. In this survey, both Japanese and Korean native speakers quickly aware that it is a refusal when they are told “Should it be done by today?”. There has not been a clear difference between both sides when they face a direct refusal. However a difference emerges with an “indirect refusal expression”. For instance, “I have a time after this report is done” is not rather “indirect” refusal and this is taken as a refusal by most Japanese side in comparison to the Korean side take it positively and “expect” him or her to do it later. This is an obvious example of the refusal expressions used among Japanese speakers but very difficult for other to understand.

일본어

本稿では、日本語教科書の分析において「依頼」に対する「断り」を分析し、それを基に日本語母語話者と韓国語母語話者の「断り」への「察し」のタイミングや種類を比較するためのアンケート調査を実施した。日本語教科書における「依頼」に対する「断り」を抜け出し、その「断り」がどのように構成されていて、どのような順序で使用されているかを考察した。教科書によっては、まったく「依頼」に対しての「断り」が扱われていないものもあった。また、コミュニケーションを重視した教科書では非常に多くの「断り」の種類や組み合わせを指導しているものもあった。次に、韓国語母語話者には理解しにくい「間接的な断り」を調査するアンケート調査を行った。今回の調査では殆んどの協力者が「え、今日中なの？」という「間接的断り」を早い段階で「断り」と察するということがわかった。また、「断り」を「察する」ところは日本語母語話者と韓国語母語話者はさほど差はなかったが、理解しにくい「間接的な断り」の違いをみることができた。例えば、「レポートが終わってからなら時間があるんだけど」は「断り」の間接度が低い方で、日本語母語話者は「断り」だと判断したが、反対に大半の韓国語母語話者は「期待」をしていることがわかる。これこそ日本人には理解できるものが韓国語母語話者には理解しにくい「間接的な断り」であるといえるだろう。
