This thesis aims to study the development of auxiliary particles ‘까지’, ‘마저’ and ‘조차’ and find out their semantic relationship in modern Korean language. ‘까지’ and ‘마저’ have developed from having the original meanings of ‘end’ and ‘limitation’ to having a secondary meaning of ‘adding’, whereas ‘조차’ has developed from the original meaning of ‘double’ and ‘togetherness’ to the meaning of ‘adding’. ‘조차’ even has the aspect of ‘negation of expectation’ or ‘extreme reinforcement of negation’ especially in modern Korean, which is somewhat different from ‘까지’ and ‘마저’. Such semantic difference could be explained from the fact that ‘조차’ had already the original meaning of ‘double’ and ‘togetherness’ whereas ‘까지’ and ‘마 저’ has developed the secondary meaning of ‘adding’ from the original meanings of ‘end’ and ‘limitation’. In conclusion, we could assume the semantic process of each word as follows: ‘까지’ has developed the meaning of ‘adding’ from the meaning of ‘limitation’, ‘마저’ from the meaning of ‘end’, and ‘조차’ has developed the meaning of ‘extreme negation’ from the original meaning of ‘adding’.

본 논의는 보조사 ‘까지, 마저, 조차’의 발달 과정을 통해 현대국어에서 이 들이 보이는 의미의 관련성을 설명해보고자 하였다. ‘까지’와 ‘마저’는 ‘종결, 한계’와 같은 기원적인 의미로부터 발달하여 ‘더함’이라는 부차적 의미를 표 현하게 되었고 ‘조차’는 ‘함께, 같이’라는 의미에서 ‘더함’의 의미를 갖게 되었 다. 현대국어에서 특히 ‘조차’는 ‘기대의 부정’이나 ‘극단적인 부정 강화’라는 양상을 띠며 ‘까지, 마저’와 다소 구별되는 측면을 보인다. 이러한 의미 차이 는 ‘조차’가 기원적으로 ‘겸하다’, ‘함께’의 의미를 가지고 있었고 ‘까지, 마저’ 는 ‘한계’나 ‘종결점’ 지시로부터 ‘더함’의 의미를 부차적으로 획득하게 된 데 서 오는 차이라 할 수 있다. 결국 ‘까지’는 ‘한계>더함’, ‘마저’는 ‘종결>더함’, ‘조차’는 ‘더함>부정 극성’과 같은 의미 변화 과정을 상정해 볼 수 있다.
