Traditionally used as a foreign language textbook in Korea, Yeok-hak-seo is a very important data in history of Korean language. Translation and annotation of Yeok-hak-seo has been done from long time ago, but in modern times, it is done along with a historic study of a certain language. This study examines a history of investigation on translation and annotation of Yeok-hak-seo done domestically and internationally. An object of this study is to find a better way to perform translation and annotation of Yeok-hak-seo. A good form of the Books in Translation and Annotation is to accompany an original text and a note in the Korean annotation of Chinese classics (including the different edition in publication order) of a certain language, a translation into contemporary Korean, an linguistic annotation, and a cultural explanation of every paragraph and to make a photographic edition available. There is also few problems when the translation and annotation of Yeok-hak-seo is done. 1) Problem of foreign language translation 2) Problem of double annotation 3) Problem of correct establishment view of history 4) Problem of adjusting the degree of difficulty 5) Problem of collaboration 6) Problem of foreigner’s participation / editing foreign language 7) Problem of direct translation / intent translation It is better that multiple scholars from different fields to cooperate on the translation and annotation of Yeok-hak-seo than an individual to work alone. It will not only save time and effort but also will produce a result with a better quality.

우리나라에서 전통적으로 외국어 교육의 교재로서 사용되어온 역학서 (Yeok-hak-seo)는 國語史 자료로서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 역학서 의 역주는 이미 오래 전부터 이루어졌지만, 현대에 와서는 해당 외국어의 역 사적 연구와 함께 병행하여 이루어지고 있다. 본고에서는 그동안 國內外에서 이루어진 譯學書의 譯註 연구사를 살펴보고, 보다 효과적으로 역학서의 역주 를 행할 수 있는 방향을 모색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 바람직한 역주본의 형태는 해당 언어의 원문과 언해문(간행 순서에 따른 異本 포함), 현대역, 언어학적 주석, 단락별 문화적 해설 등을 곁들이고, 영인 본도 함께 볼 수 있도록 하는 것이 좋겠다. 역학서의 역주를 할 때 발생하는 문제점도 몇 가지 있다. (1) 외국어 통번 역의 문제, (2) 이중(二重) 주석의 문제 (3) 올바른 사관(史觀)의 정립 문제 (4) 난이도 조정의 문제 (5) 공동작업의 문제 (6) 외국인의 참여 및 외국어 감수 문제 (7) 의역·직역의 문제 등이 있다. 역학서의 역주는 개인보다는 여러 분야에서 전문적인 학식을 가진 복수 의 연구자가 공동작업으로 하는 것이 시간과 노력을 절약하고 내용적으로도 완성도 높은 결과물을 얻을 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
