Eco-themed illustration has a strong nature of shared communication for persuading and urging action rather than a simple information transfer. If property of a sign is in ideology construction, the purpose of this study is to examine falsity of the ideology of eco-themed visual messages by the analysis of semiotics and to identify the signification system and its approach. Significance of Barthes that is valid for an analysis of visual symbols and communication capability model of Jakobson was researched and applied in the analytical framework against the eco-themed illustration through domestic and foreign print media and internet resources. The symbolic action of representamen is made by metaphors and symbols that are based on spiritual awareness, and it was identified that the cultural and social phenomenons are involved in symbol and mythical system. It was confirmed that the roles of semiotics can be expected in future environmental polity by ideological conflict of ecocentrism and anthropocentrism, the two flows of earth environment and conservation strategy, securing a lot of discourse.

에코 테마 일러스트레이션은 단순한 정보 전달보다는 설득과 행동 촉구를 위한 공유 개념의 커뮤니케이션 성격이 강하다. 기호의 속성이 이데올로기 구축에 있다면 연구 목적은 기호학으로 분석하여 ECO 비주얼 메시지의 이데올로기 허위성을 살펴보고 의미작용 체계와 방식을 규명하는 것이다. 국내 외 인쇄 매체와 인터넷 자료를 통한 ECO 테마 일러스트레이션을 대상으로 시각기호 분석에 유효한 바르트(Barthes)의 의미작용 방식 그리고 야콥슨(Jakobson)의 커뮤니케이션 기능 모델을 고찰해 분석틀에 적용해 보았다. 기호의 의미작용은 정신적 인식을 바탕으로 하는 은유와 상징에 의해서 이루어지며 신화체계는 문화현상과 사회현상이 개입되어 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 지구환경 보존 전략의 두 가지 흐름인 생태중심주의와 인간중심주의 간의 이데올로기 대립이 담론의 여지가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
