This essay is trying to reconstitute Korean female film editor as technical staff Kim Young-hee and Lee Kyong-ja’s oral statements by means of gender or feministic point of view. I had worked as one of interviewers who documented veteran film workers’ oral history as part of the Korean Film Achieve research 2005 through 2008, and I was taking care of 10 veteran film workers. During the experience, the fact that there are differences in way of speaking according to their own genders drew my attention. The meaning of veteran female film worker’s oral statement is the radical question in itself cast against the framework of Korean film history written and produced mainly centered on a man, South Korea, Seoul, a director and a nation. In addition, the power of oral history could be more effective in oral statements of “secondary staff” than that of the “main staff such as the director, the screenwriter, the actor/actress and the cinematographer” for it could fill in empty and hidden part of the official Korean film history. It has been quite restrictive for female staff to be involved in the production field except actresses. Until 1980s, there were only 5 female directors, Park Nam-oak, Hong Eun-won, Choi Eun-hee, Whang Hye- mee, and Lee Mi-rea. The only accessible parts for woman were assistant director, screenwriter, continuity person, wardrobe, film editor and voice actress. It is quite hard to trace the active female career in the film industry as it is in the record of other public area. It is not too much to say that the film editor is the only technical staff in the film industry where woman could take part in. Thus the oral statements of Kim Young-hee and Lee Kyong-ja proves the existence of film technicians and the female professionals who have been a driving force to Korean film history although hidden. In addition, their stories would help enriching Korean woman’s history as they shed light on Korean female film technicians in views of patriarchy and modern Korean Film history.

이 글은 영화 기술 스태프인 여성편집인 김영희, 이경자의 구술채록을 여성주의적 혹은 젠더적으로 재구성하려는 시도이다. 필자는 2005년부터 2008년까지 한국영상자료원의 원로영화인 구술채록 연구에 참여하면서 10인의 원로영화인의 구술채록을 진행하였는데, 구술자의 젠더에 따라 구술방식의 차이를 보인다는 것에 주목하게 되었다. 남성, 남한, 서울, 감독, 민족 중심으로 서술해 온 한국영화사의 문제틀에 대한 질문이 될 수 있는 것이 바로 한국영화사 연구에서 여성영화인 구술사의 의미일 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 한국영화사 연구자들에게는 여전히 목마른 한국영화사의 공식적인 역사 기록들의 이면과 빈 곳을 채워줄 수 있는 연구방법론으로서의 구술사의 힘이 더 발휘될 수 있는 부분은 주요 스태프들(감독, 시나리오 작가, 배우, 촬영 등)보다는 ‘뒷 스태프들’의 구술을 보다 더 충분하게 채록하는 것일 수 있다. 여배우를 제외하고는 한국영화 제작 현장에서 여성 스태프가 관여하는 부분은 상당히 제한적이다. 1980년대까지도 여성 영화감독은 박남옥, 홍은원, 최은희, 황혜미, 이미례 다섯 명뿐이고, 여성이 영화계에서 담당한 분야는 주로 연출부, 시나리오, 스크립터, 의상, 편집, 성우뿐이었다. 과거 사회의 공적인 영역에서 여성의 활동은 많지 않았고 얼마 안 되는 여성 전문직의 역사적 자취를 찾기가 힘든 것과 마찬가지로, 영화계에서도 이들 전문직 여성인력이 활발하게 활동한 공적인 기록을 찾기도 쉽지 않다. 이중 영화 작업에서 기술 인력으로서 전문성을 담보하는 분야는 편집뿐이라고 해도 과언은 아니다. 한국영화를 추동한 힘이었지만 영화사에서 드러나지 않았던 기술 인력의 존재 그리고 여성 영화인의 역사를 드러내고 한국영화사에 기입하는 이 두 가지 관심의 교차점에 편집기사 김영희와 이경자가 있다. 게다가 이들의 삶은 한국여성사적인 관점에서 전문직 여성으로서의 여성 영화 스태프의 역사를 가부장제와 한국영화의 근대적 발전 속에서 역동적으로 바라본다는 의미에서의 또 다른 교차점에도 위치하고 있다.
