A Study on the Modalities of Documentary on Otherness －Focusing on the Documentaries on the North Korean Football Teams－ Kim, Sun-ah Research Professor, Korea Culture Technology Institute, Dankook University The Documentary is a genre characterized by indexicality film and profilmic reality that are not able to be divided. The indexicality seems as the expression of a desire to capture the scarce images existing in reality and to document and preserve them. The desire of a documentary is implied in the documentaries representing and understanding other cultures such as cross-cultural analysis and transnational approach. Documentaries on North Korea from the West have constantly been produced and circulated since the 1990s because North Korea has few national images and is known for the most secretive and exclusive country from the West. This paper compares a North Korean Documentary to two documentaries on North Korean commonly focusing on national football teams in terms of its cultural perspectives and manners. Their approaches are able to divide pejorative appropriation, ventriloquist identification, creative understanding, and thick description. The Female Football Players in the Age of Sungoon Chosun, The Game of Their Lives, and Hana, Dul, Sed… which this paper analyzes are crossing between the inside/outside of North Korea, the East/West, male/female, men’s history/women’s history, communism/ capitalism, I/other, system/individual and so on with the different ways of each approach and attitude through North Korean football. This paper describes The Female Football Players in the Age of Sungoon Chosun as a propagandistic mode that 75 depicts female football from their own culture, The Game of Their Lives as a mode of a typical sports documentary that tries a disjunction between own and other culture through football and its heroes, and Hana, Dul, Sed… as a mode of a feminist documentary that constitutes the non-place’s discourses of women’s community of not football heroines but female football players including a female film director. This paper especially focuses on the ways that a documentary represents North Korea/gender (man and woman)/football in a relationship of division and articulation among football as sports, social imagery on gender and national representative representation. After an analysis on each documentary, this paper will conclude that Hana, Dul, Sed… as a contemporary mode of a feminist documentary that gender takes a critical role in a triple relationship of sports, gender and nation-state has the most ethical perspective and attitude on other culture.

다큐멘터리는 전영화적(profilmic) 현실과 영화를 분리할 수 없는 지표성을 특징 으로 하고 있는 장르이다. 다큐멘터리의 지표성은 현실에 존재하는 낯선 자연과 문 화 등 희귀 이미지를 포착해서 기록하고 보존하려는 욕망의 표현이라 할 수 있다. 그러한 다큐멘터리의 욕망은 현재 비교문화나 통문화적 접근과 같이 타문화를 표상 하고 이해하기 위한 다큐멘터리에서 드러난다. 북한을 소재로 한 다큐멘터리들 또 한 1990년대부터 서구의 각종 국제 다큐멘터리 영화제에 등장을 해서 가장 비밀스 럽고 폐쇄적인 국가 이미지의 희소성을 교환가치로 지금까지 꾸준히 만들어지고 있 다. 본 논문은 북한을 소재로 한 다큐멘터리들과 북한 내부에서 제작된 다큐멘터리 를 함께 비교하면서 이들 다큐멘터리들이 표상하고 있는 자문화/타문화에 대한 관 점과 태도를 분석한다. 크게 문화에 대한 접근은 경멸적 전유, 복화술적 동일화, 창 조적 이해, 그리고 중층 기술 방식으로 나눌 수 있다. 본 논문이 분석하고 있는 <선 군조선 녀자축구선수들>, <천리마 축구단>, <하나, 둘, 셋…>은 북한 축구를 매개로 각기 다른 접근 방법과 태도를 갖고 북한 내부/외부, 동양/서구, 남성/여성, 남성의 역사/여성의 역사, 사회주의/자본주의, 나/타자, 체제/개인 등을 횡단하고 있다. 본 논문은 <선군조선의 녀자축구선수들>을 여자 축구라는 자문화에 대해 서술 하는 북한 프로파간다 양식으로, <천리마 축구단>은 축구와 축구 영웅들을 매개로 자문화와 타문화간의 이접을 시도하는 스포츠 다큐멘터리 양식으로, 그리고 <하나, 둘, 셋…>은 축구영웅으로서의 여성이 아니라 여성 감독을 포함한 여자 선수들 (간)의 비장소적 여성 공동체 담론을 형성하는 여성주의 다큐멘터리 양식으로 분류 한다. 특히 본 논문은 축구라는 스포츠, 젠더에 대한 사회적 심상, 그리고 민족국 가의 대표 표상 간의 분절과 절합 관계 위에서 북한/젠더(여성과 남성)/축구가 다 큐멘터리로 표상되는 방식에 집중하고 있다. 세 편에 대한 개별 분석을 통해 본 논 문에서는 <하나, 둘, 셋…>을 스포츠, 젠더, 민족국가의 삼중 관계에서 젠더가 비판 적으로 작동하고 있는 여성주의 다큐멘터리의 현대적 양식이자, 타문화에 대한 다 큐멘터리의 윤리적 접근을 보여주는 예로 제시할 것이다.
