Arts had long been regarded as something separated from reality until the mid 19th century, when realism as an important turning point in art trends came into existence. Artistic expressions are attributable to social conditions in each era and place. In particular, realism is supposed to pay attention to the meanings inherent in a certain age let alone superficial forms. The art field in Korea, the people's art in particular, took notice of remarkable spatial changes resulting from industrialization. Since 1960s, the residential appearance in Korea has been transformed rapidly as a symbol of modernization. Such materialistic spatial changes have brought lots of benefits to dwellers in urban areas. Unfortunately and eventually, side effects have ensued. Humans, who do not have to settle down in one place, have lost fundamental ties with places. Urban development based on repeated overall removal has caused a range of social problems. Examples of such problems include small and petty landlords and tenants who can not help but move to suburban regions losing their places and the one time residential areas built driven by financial values. Artists in favor of social criticism and realism look squarely on and make efforts to discourse upon such consistent and continuous social issues. Further, they change their attitudes and expressions in accordance with varying social atmospheres and are concerned about effective ways of demonstration of their worries. As the discourse on democratization declined following the end of people's art, the world of art gave up the political propensity and turned to another discourse on residential areas from the perspective of privacy. Some artists express places based on nostalgia and experience with immanent truthfulness. Public arts demonstrated through groups are actively involved in urban life, seeking after alternative relations between society and art. Though it may be too early to judge the social meanings of such efforts that made by the field of art, involvement and participation of art in society and reality are justified in that such efforts could lead to possible alternative roles.

미술은 오랜 기간 동안 현실과 별개인 것으로 인식되어 왔으나 19세기 중반 사 실주의의 등장 이후로 중요한 전환점을 맞이한다. 예술의 표현은 그 시대와 장소의 사회적 상황에서 기인하는 것으로 특히, 사실주의는 외형뿐만 아니라 시대의 내재 적 의미까지 살피는 것이다. 한국의 미술계는 민중미술을 시작으로 산업화로 인한 급격한 공간의 변화에 주목하였다. 1960년대 이후의 한국은 근대화의 표상으로서 주거지의 외관을 빠르게 바꾸어나갔다. 이런 장소의 물질주의적 변화는 도시인에 게 많은 혜택을 가져다주었으나 그에 대한 부작용도 필연적으로 드러나기 시작하 였다. 한 장소에 뿌리내릴 필요가 없어진 인간은 장소와의 기본적인 유대를 상실했 으며 반복되는 전면철거방식의 도시개발은 각종 사회문제들을 야기하고 있다. 영 세가옥주와 세입자들이 장소를 잃고 점점 외곽으로 내몰리는 상황과 금전적 가치 로서의 일회성 주거지 조성 등이 그것이다. 사회비판적 사실주의의 입장에 선 작가 들은 이런 일관적으로 지속되는 사회의 문제점을 직시하고 이에 대한 담론을 형성 하기 위해 노력하였다. 이들은 변화하는 사회분위기에 맞춰 그 표현방식과 태도를 바꾸어 왔으며 효과적인 표출에 대해 고민하고 있다. 민중미술이 막을 내리고 민주 화에 대한 담론이 수그러들면서 미술계는 기존의 정치적 성향을 버리고 사적인 시 각에서 주거지에 대한 담론을 꾀한다. 일부 작가들은 진정성이 내재된 향수와 경험 에 기초하여 장소를 표현하며 집단을 통해 표출되는 공공미술은 도시에 적극적인 개입으로 사회와 미술의 대안적 관계를 모색한다. 이런 미술계의 노력은 아직 그 사회적 의미를 판단하기에는 시기적인 거리가 짧으나 사회현실에 개입하는 미술의 당위성이 인정되며 역할의 대안적 가능성을 기대할 수 있다.
