Given the historical importance of the Cannes Film Festival to the international filmic calendar coupled with the rise in Korean cinema's global fortunes in recent years, their cross-examination provides a good starting point in an investigation of the 'critical capital' being currently accrued by Korean cinema in international territories. This paper, more specifically, considers the discursive work with respect to this theme carried out by reviewing practices in major trade journals covering the Cannes Film Festival as a means of unpacking the critical strategies mediating Korean cinema to the film going public in Europe and beyond. After outlining an argument that draws links between the critical reception to and consumption of 'festival films', the paper attends to how the particularities of modes of reviewing filmmakers as diverse as Kim Ki-duk, Hong Sang-soo, and Lee Chang-dong impact upon their critical status in international contexts.
