This study is about the ontological status of mind. Neuroscience has accumulated remarkable research achievements on human brains. And based on that, a numerous tries to explain human minds and behaviors into a physical process of the brain are pouring out. The mind-body issue raised in 1950s' philosophy of mind comes to the fore again in Neuroscience field. In this era, science is regarded as an important norm to distinguish between truth and false. In that sense, the research achievements of neuroscience on the mind-body problems should be covered as the main points when it comes to discussing the mind-body causation and the ontological status of mind Morality forms the very core of the mind and spirit. Also, we carry out moral education to cultivate morality of the learners. To define the ontological status of morality is one important standard in setting up the goals and directions of moral education as well as the fundamental task of ethics and moral philosophy. Thus, this paper covers the physicalistic standpoint and neuroscientific approach on the mind issue and interprets their current suggestions from the point of view of moral education.

본 논문은 도덕성의 존재론적 지위를 연구한다. 신경과학은 인간의 두뇌에 대한 연구성과를 상당히 축적하였다. 그리고 그것에 근거해서 인간의 정신과 행동을 두뇌의 물리적 과정으로 환원하여 설명하려는 시도들 또한 쏟아내고 있다. 이는 1950년대 심리철학에서 제기된 심신문제가 신경과학의 장에서 다시 대두되고 있는 것이다. 우리가 사는 이 시대는 과학이 믿음의 참과 거짓을 판별하는 중요한 기준이 되고 있다. 그런 의미에서 심신문제에 대한 신경과학의 연구 성과는 심신인과, 마음의 존재론적 지위를 논의하는데 주요하게 다루어져야 한다. 도덕성은 인간의 마음, 정신의 핵심을 구성한다. 그리고 우리는 학습자의 도덕성을 기르기 위해 도덕교육을 수행한다. 그리고 도덕성의 존재론적 지위(The ontological status)를 규명하는 것은 윤리학과 도덕철학(moral philosophy)의 근본과제일뿐만 아니라, 도덕교육의 목표와 방향을 설정하는데 있어서도 하나의 중요한 기준점이 된다. 따라서, 본 논문은 최근의 마음에 대한 물리주의의 입장과 신경과학적 접근에 대해 살펴보고, 도덕교육의 관점에서 이들의 입장이 시사하는 바가 무엇인지를 해석해 본다.
