This paper investigates the motives and performance of Korean firms’ foreign direct investment (FDI) in Russia based on survey data and empirical analysis. The results show that the purpose of Korean FDI in Russia is to pursue the local market rather than to utilize low labor costs, giving support to the argument that the motives of FDI in Russia are market-seeking. It is also found that firm size was important for improving the performance. The level of firms’ sales will be better off as local subsidiaries decide on the new facility and level of prices on products, and Mother Companies choose where to procure materials. This shows that the motive and localization management is important for FDI performance.

본 연구는 러시아에 진출한 한국기업을 대상으로 설문조사를 바탕으로 러시아 현지 한국기업의 투자 동기와 경영성과를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 러시아에 진출한 한국기업의 투자 동기는 현지의 낮은 임금을 추구하는 효율성 추구보다는 내수시장에 진입하기 위한 것으로 나타나, 한국기업의 대러시아 진출은 시장추구에 있다는 주장을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 본 연구는 기업의 규모가 클수록 경영성과를 개선하는데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다는 점도 발견하였다. 기업매출 성장은 현지 법인이 새로운 생산시설 확장, 제품가격 등을 결정하고, 그리고 재료 및 부품조달은 모기업이 결정하는 기업일수록 더욱 개선되는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 외국인직접투자의 경영성과를 개선하기 위해서는 기업의 투자동기 및 경영현지화가 매우 중요하다는 점을 의미하는 것으로 해석된다.
