The objective of this research is to investigate the merit and demerit of exchange between Korea and Mongolia through historical relation between both countries, namely, the dual activity of King Chungseon in the age of Koryo. The international exchange of both countries in the age of King Chungseon that has been checked so far is generally understood only in the position of hostile relation through war or the intervening period of Yuan. Investigating such recognition in other aspect, the relation of both countries is generally realized in terms of mutual positive exchange of politics, society and culture in this period. Referring to development of historic exchange of modern Korea and Mongolia to check Korea and Mongolia in this aspect, the author determined to investigate the necessity and merit/demerit of Koryo and Mongolia on the basis of King Chungseon. The specific research method for this research is as follows. First, the age background of history of both countries is investigated. The process of Mongolia and Korea countries including federation, war relation and the enhancement of the age of Koryo, both countries were in difficult relation and in the most active exchange in this age. However, the peculiarity of relation between Koryo and Mongolia, specifically, the relation between Koryo and Mongolia in the age of Koryo for characteristics of matrimonial relation and national position of royal families of both countries can be understood only as unstable relation of war and intervention of Yuan to people. At first, both countries started from the mutually amicable relation of federation through joint operation to annihilate Georan. However, the relation of both countries was interrupted when Mongolian envoy was slain on his way to fatherland. Further, the accident gave rise to war between both countries. After war, both countries realized matrimony between royal family as the factor to conclude enhance and federation. Koryo and Mongolia could stabilize the unstable relation through matrimonial relation. The marriage between royal family of both countries maintained the relation of both countries in special form, while considering the interest of both countries. Second, the author checked relation of both countries through King Chungseon. As the first king of mixed blood of Mongolia and the grandchild of Sejo, King Chungseon exerted strong politic power in both countries of Koryo and Yuan. King Chungseon had peculiar position, actively accepting the custom and system of Yuan. Namely, King Chungseon controlled relation of Koryo-Yuan with such politic power. The specific chronicle, his enthronement and enthrone protocol of King Chungseon shows the dual figure of Koryo and Mongolia. As King Chungseon was re-enthroned, Koryo further depended on Mongolia. The king even stayed in Yuan during most of reign to rule the country at distant place.

이 연구는 고려시대 충선왕(忠宣王)의 생애에 나타난 여몽(麗蒙) 관계를 고찰함으로써, 궁극적으로 현대 한몽관계의 역사적 이해를 돕는 데 목적이 있다. 최초의 혼혈군주였던 충선왕은 태생부터 서거시까지 고려와 몽골(:元)의 이중적 정체성을 지닐 수밖에 없는 정치인의 신분이었다. 따라서 그의 행보는 항시 고려와 몽골 양국의 이해를 모두 반영할 수밖에 없었다. 지금까지 충선왕에 대한 연구는 주로 그의 개혁정치에 관한 것과 그것에 미친 몽골의 영향을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 이 연구에서는 이들 기존연구와 1차문헌에 토대하여 충선왕의생애에 나타난 여몽관계를 살펴보았다. 먼저 2장에서는 배경적 요인으로 양국의 동맹과 전쟁관계 그리고 강화의 양국관계를 검토하였으며, 이어서 쿠빌라이의 외손이자 몽골황실의 부마로서의 위상과 여몽 관계를 살펴보았고, 마지막으로 이 두 가지에 기초한 고려국왕의 대외적 위상을 살펴보았다. 3장에서는 충선왕의 생애를 중심으로 여몽 관계를 살펴보되, 2장에서 살펴본 요소들과 연계 위에서 검토하였다. 다만 충선왕의 순수한 의지가 꺽이기 전인 1차 재위기를 중심으로 고찰하였다.
