This article is aimed at revealing the truth surrounding his family line, social status, and martyrdom of Martyr Jeong Chan-mun(鄭燦文). The reference materials that testify the life of Martyr Jeong Chan-mun, has been embellished and enriched as it passes down the generations. According to the Jokbo(族譜), Jeong Chan-mum is from ‘the family of Jinju(晉州) Jeong(鄭)’, which was originated from Ugok(隅谷) Jeong On(鄭溫, 1324∼1402). However, there is no Hyeonjo(顯祖) with distinctive achievement in the Munjung(門中) of Jeong Chan-mun. This is the reason for his family line being as Ugokgongpa(隅谷公派) until today. The conclusion drawn from the instances related to his family line and the ‘Restoration of Ugokjeong(隅谷亭),’ proves us the fact that the Munjung of Jeong Chan-mun was merelya family of Hyangban(鄕班), although they had a reinforced JoseonUisik(祖先意識) of being the descendants of Jeong On. The birth father of Jeong Chan-mun was Jeong Seo-jin (鄭瑞珍, 1782∼1850), but he was adopted by Jungbu(仲父) Jeong Seo-gon. Jeong Chan-mun had a son named Dosun(道舜). He left his hometown with his mother, so he is recorded as Muhu(無后) in Jokbo. The village of Jungchon(中村) in Dongmyeon(東面), Jinju, where Jeong Chan-mun was born, was inferior in terms of social and financial status when It is compared to the village of Ugok. And it was less influenced by the Munjung of Ugokgongpa. It can be presumed that his social status must be even lower than the one of his Munjung. It has been presumed that he became catholic in 1863, which was three years before he die a martyr, by the influence of his catholic wife. However, there is also a high possibility that he joined catholic voluntarily, and married to his wife within the church. Based on the testimonial materials of the church and the truth of Mudumyo(無頭墓), it can be said that Jeong Chang-mun was arrested by the pogyo(捕校) from the Topocheong(討捕廳) of JinjuJinyoung(晉州鎭營), and put in the Juok(州獄). Later he was executed by JinjuYoungjang(晉州營長) in the field of JinjuJinyoung. It proves that his faith was firm and strong. He was found dead without his head. He was be headed.
