Flushing is located 20 km east of Manhattan, the center of New York City. It is a town populated by 176,000 people. Flushing is surrounded by major highways running east to west and south to north. It is the terminal of the 7 subway line, which connects Flushing and Manhattan. The Long Island Rail Road flows through the heart of Flushing. Also, Northern Blvd., the oldest road, which was once used by local Native Americans, runs parallel to the LIRR train tracks east to west. Flushing used to be a typical suburban town, resided by mostly white people before 1970s. The town grew as the bed town of Manhattan due to the development of various transportation means and the residential town for people commuting to and from Manhattan. Flushing started to change rapidly as the new wave of Asian immigrants was rushing into the town due to the 1965Immigration Law. One of the factors that contributed to the abrupt change of Flushing was Korean immigrants. There were already about 500 Koreans in New York City before 1970s, but most of them were here as foreign students and they resided in Manhattan. Since 1970, Korean immigrants started to settle down along the 7 train line which connected Flushing and Manhattan. Flushing , the last stop of 7 train, attracted many Koreans to settle down with its convenient location closed to the subway station, stable residential environment, and most of all, superior education environment. As a result, the biggest Korea town in the northeastern section of America was formed in Flushing in the1980s. At a certain point of the 1980s, a Chinese immigrant wave followed the Koreans’ and moved into the Korean areas, which was in the middle of Flushing. As a result, Flushing Korea Town started to leave the center of Flushing since the mid 1990s. The new Korea town started to flourish along Northern Blvd. in Flushing. During this time, the original image remembered by the first generation Korean immigrants is disappearing and about to be forgotten forever in history. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to collect and maintain historical data to commemorate Flushing Koreatown for our Korean immigrant history records. This study is for the purpose of raising awareness of Flushing Koreatown. The researcher is going to review the geographic overview of Flushing, demographic changes in Flushing and the changes in the settlement pattern of Korean immigrants. Especially through photographs of Koreans living and working in Flushing Koreatown taken in 2010, the study will reflect the history of Flushing Koreatown. The perspective of the researcher's personal experiences will be reflected in this study for he has lived in the Flushing area for the past 25 years. In essence, this introductory study will allow the researcher to preserve valuable historical data about Flushing Koreatown and establish a framework and direction for the full-scale research.

뉴욕시의 중심인 맨하탄으로 가는 7번 지하철역의 종점인 플러싱 타운은 편리한 교통과 안정된 주거환경 그리고 무엇보다도 우수한 교육 환경 등으로 1980년대를 지나면서 미동부 지역에서 최대의 코리아타운으로 형성되었다. 하지만 한인 이민자들에 이어 플러싱 지역에 들어오기 시작한 중국인들의 기세로 플러싱 코리아타운은 형성된 지 20년도 채 되지 않은 1990년대 중반 이후부터 플러싱 중심 지역을 떠나 노던 블러바드를 타고 새롭게 발전하기 시작했다. 이러한 과정에서 한인 이민자들의 초창기 이민 모습들이 많이 사라져 가고 있으며, 이제 얼마 안 있어 영원히 잊혀져 버릴 위기에까지 와있다. 미주 한인 이민 역사에 플러싱 코리아타운을 영원히 보존하기 위한 역사적인 자료들의 수집과 더불어 디지털화가 절실히 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 지난 25년간 생활해 온 필자의 경험을 토대로 플러싱 코리아타운 디지털화를 위한 기초 연구로서 플러싱의 지리적인 개관과 플러싱의 인구학적인 변화 및 한인들의 정착 형태의 변화 등을 살펴본 것이다. 특히 사진 자료들을 통해 플러싱 코리아타운의 2010년 현재의 한인들의 삶의 모습을 보면서 이전의 플러싱 코리아타운의 역사를 더듬어 보았다. 본 연구는 플러싱 코리아타운에 대한 역사적 자료를 시급히 보존해야 한다는 목적을 지닌 기초 연구로서 그 의의와 가치가 있다고 하겠다.
