The purpose of this paper is to compare and consider the domestic and foreign theories on the translation of Free Indirect Discourse (FID) and to identify the translation strategies applicable to translation between French and Korean in literature. In the beginning, we will propose the methodological frame for the theoretical study of the FID and FID translation. The latter in which we are interested in this article consists of three types of studies: the studies concentraining mainly on the indices of the FID; those concentrating on the conversion into other discourse; and those on the object of the reproduction of the FID. We then subdivide these studies into intra-textual and extra-textual approaches. After applying the domestic and foreign theories for the translation of the FID to the study frame which we propose in this article, we conduct analysis to examine if it is possible to apply the solutions to issues of FID translation to the translation of the FID between French and Korean languages for successful reproduction of the polyphonic ambiguity of the FID in the literature.
