The purpose of this study is to suggest the need to approach the pastoral counseling and the function of church with the integrated viewpoint, taking effectively the mission of church for the God’s Kingdom. The pastoral counseling and the function of church are the theoretic and practical areas of the church, the Christ’s body. With this reason, these two factors have the many things in common. The pastoral counseling and the function of church are practised in church with Christ as the center. The purpose of pastoral counseling is to heal and restore the whole life through the relationship of counsellor and counselee and eventually to believe in God.
The main five functions of church are Worship Service, Kerygma, Koinonia, Diakonia and Didache. The purpose of these functions are, by strengthening the Christ’s body, to expand the Kingdom of God which is the key point of the Gospel. The function of church has the power to change the world as well as the lives of the Christians. It involves the followings; Accepting and experiencing God through the worship service, converting and changed life through Kerygma, considering the quality of life through establishing the smooth personal relationship, experiencing the dynamics of the community and maturing through instruction. With these things, the function of church makes the Christians experience the new life and realize the God’s will to save the world.
Based on this background, this study emphasizes the need of grafting the two areas onto the educational field of theology and counseling department as well as the ministering area.

이 연구의 목적은 하나님 나라를 향하는 교회의 사명을 효과적으로 감당할 수 있도록 목회상담과 교회의 기능을 통합적인 관점으로 접근할 필요성을 제기하기 위함이다. 목회상담과 교회의 기능은 그리스도의 몸인 교회에 관한 이론과 실제의 영역인데 그런 면에서 이 두 요소는 공통적인 부분이 많다. 목회상담과 교회의 기능은 모두 교회를 중심으로 행해지며 그 중심에 그리스도가 있다. 목회상담의 목적은 상담자와 내담자의 상담관계를 통하여 삶의 전반적인 부분에서의 치유와 회복, 그리고 더 나아가 하나님을 만나게 하는데 있다.
교회의 주요 기능으로 예배, 케리그마, 코이노니아, 디아코니아, 디다케 다섯 가지를 들 수 있는데 이 기능들의 목적은 그리스도의 몸으로서의 교회를 세움으로 예수의 복음선포 내용의 핵심인 하나님 나라를 확장하는데 있다. 교회의 기능은 그리스도인의 삶을 변화시킬 뿐 아니라 세상을 변화시키는 능력이 있다. 예배를 통한 하나님과의 만남과 하나님 체험, 케리그마를 통한 회심과 삶의 변화, 원만한 관계형성을 통한 삶의 질을 제고함, 섬김과 봉사를 통한 공동체의 역동성 체험, 교육을 통한 성장 등 교회의 기능은 그리스도인들로 하여금 새로운 삶을 체험하게 하며 세상을 구원하고자 하는 하나님의 뜻을 실현할 수 있다. 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 목회현장은 물론 신학과 상담학의 교육현장에 두 학문의 접목이 필요함을 강조하였다.
