This study is an attempt to investigate the meaning of Q methodology which emphasizes the human subjectivity towards diversity of HRD research methods. The analysis in this study is based on the Crotty(1998)'s four elements of research composed of epistemology, theoretical perspective, methodology, and methods. Quantitative approach as one of mainstream research approaches adopts the analysis on inter-variables relations, and thus it tries to understand and explain subjects indirect way. However, Q methodology applies the correlations among people on the basis of the subjectivity of perceptions. Moreover, qualitative as another component of mainstream research approaches has common in neo-positivistic assumptions, and this reveals the different nature of subjectivity in Q methodology. With regard to major findings, Q methodology has significance as an independent methodology and methods in relation to mixed research approach. This study also shows that American pragmatism and constructionism are relevant to Q methodology in theoretical perspectives and epistemology, respectively. Finally, this study suggests the applicability of Q methodology research in HRD and adult education as an applied field from the critical viewpoints.

이 연구에서는 인적자원개발 이론 정립을 위한 연구 방법의 다양성을 추구하기 위해 Crotty(1998)의 모형을 토대로 주관성을 중심으로 하는 Q 방법론의 의미를 검토하였다. Crotty(1998)의 연구의 네 가지 요소는 방법-방법론-이론적 관점-인식론으로 구성된다. 주류에 해당하는 인적자원개발의 양적 연구방법이 변인간 관계에 대한 분석을 통해 사람들을 간접적으로 이해하고 설명하려는 방식이라면 Q 방법론은 인식의 주관성을 중심으로 사람들 사이의 상관관계를 찾아내는 방식을 적용한다. 이 연구는 양적 연구와 질적 연구의 신실증주의적 공통성과는 상이한 Q 방법론의 주관성 의미를 제시하고자 하였다. 분석 결과 Q 방법론은 통합적 연구 방법론과 방법으로서의 의미를 지니며, 이론적 관점에서 Pierce를 위시한 미국의 프래그머티즘과 구성주의의 인식론적 관점과 관련 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 응용 학문 영역에 속하는 인적자원개발과 성인교육에서의 이론 정립을 위한 연구 방법의 다양성 제고를 위해 비판적 관점에서 Q 방법론의 연구 적용 가능성을 제언하였다.
