Analyzing survey data on students of Kyungpook National University, this study shows that the political effects of regionalism-oriented socialization are limited. Previous literature indicates that regionalism, one of the major characteristics of Korean politics, has been permeated into next generation, which results in the sustenance of party loyalty and the boost of turnout. Regionalism-oriented socialization is alleged to be a key factor for a future of Korean politics. However, reality differs; the level of political participation in the regional bloc is relatively low. This study attempts to solve this discrepancy. For this purpose, students of Kyungpook National University, which is located at the city of Daegu, one of the well-known regional bloc, are selected and surveyed. The findings show that the political effects of regionalism-oriented socialism tend to be exaggerated. Political socialization in the regional bloc tends to have an efffect on political concerns, yet it does not have the assumed effects on political participation such as turnout and party membership. In addition, the effects of regionalism-oriented socialization differ when examining either father's role or mother's role. We conclude, therefore, that the argument that the regionalism-oriented socialization brings a substantive impact on politics should be reconsidered.

본 연구는 지역주의 정치사회화로 인한 정치적 효과가 상당히 제한적임을 경북대학교 대학생을 통하여 경험적으로 분석하고 있다. 기존연구에 비추어 볼 때, 한국 정치의 대표적 특징인 지역주의는 세습되고 있으며, 이에 따른 정당일체감 유지와 정치참여는 한국정치의 미래를 형성할 요소로서 지적되고 있다. 그러나 기존연구의 발견과는 다르게, 지역주의가 강한 지역의 정치참여 수준은 그렇지 않은 지역에 비하여 낮은 것으로 나타나고 있다. 따라서 이론과 현실의 부합성이 떨어지는 것을 목격할 수 있다. 본 연구는 지역주의 성향이 가장 강한 곳 중 한 곳인 대구지역의 경북대학교 대학생을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 이용하여, 지역주의의 정치사회화로 인한 정치적 효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과를 보면, 지역주의의 정치사회화는 기존연구에 제시된 바와는 다르게 상당히 제한적인 효과만을 나타내고 있었다. 즉, 지역주의의 정치적 사회화는 정치적 관심도는 증가시키지만, 투표참여와 정당가입과 같은 정치참여에는 상당히 제한적인 영향만을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 부모에 의한 정치사회화가 투표참여나 정당가입에 미치는 제한적인 영향력 경로가 동일한 것이 아닌 차별적인 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 발견에 근거해 볼 때, 지역주의 정치사회화가 실질적인 의미에서의 정치적 결과를 가져오기에는 상당히 제한적인 것으로 추정할 수 있다.
