The purpose of this study is to examine the effect and meaning of literacy education on married female immigrants as they are faced with various problems adjusting to their lives in Korea. The study participants were six married female immigrants who were also literacy education participants at P. Education Center in Dongdaemun-gu district, Seoul. Furthermore, the study method involved in-depth interviews and participant observation through open-ended questions which are a form of qualitative research. According to the study results, the effect of literacy education on married female immigrants is as follows: Literacy education involves not only the acquisition of the ability to read and write, but also provides opportunities for married female immigrants to get together to understand Korean culture during the learning process. Literacy education allowed these women to get together and make new friends through the exchange of thoughts. Many changes have occurred in family relationships, social participation, self-confidence in life, positive thinking, and their social status; however, the biggest change existed in their relationships with children and their roles in children’s education. These women obtained the ‘confidence’ to believe that they can participate socially as they learned the Korean language. One of the participants became not only interested in her own child’s education, but even capable of teaching the child on her own. Moreover, literacy education helped these women to understand their children better through longer conversations with them.

본 연구의 목적은 여성 결혼이민자들을 중심으로 그들이 한국에 정착하여 발생하는 다양한 문제들에 대하여 문해교육이 여성 결혼이민자들에게 주는 의미는 무엇이며, 그들의 한국 정착 과정에 어떠한 영향을 주었는가에 대해 심층적으로 살펴보는 것이다. 연구참여자는 동대문구 P교육센터의 문해교육에 참여하고 있는 여성 결혼이민자 6명이며, 연구방법으로는 개방형(open-ended question) 질문을 통한 심층면담과 참여관찰이 이용되었다. 본 연구에서는 여성 결혼이민자들의 참여관찰 및 심층면담을 통해 수집된 자료들을 범주의 틀에 맞추어 직접 해석하거나 비교, 분석하였다. 연구결과 여성 결혼이민자들에게 문해교육이 주는 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 단순히 글자를 해독하고 쓸 줄 아는 능력 습득을 넘어서서 한국 문화에 대해 이해할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 둘째, 여성 결혼이민자들이 모여서 서로의 생각을 나눌 수 있고 친구를 만들 수 있는 장을 제공하여 한국 생활 적응에 큰 도움이 되었다. 요컨대, 여성 결혼이민자들은 자신들이 참여한 문해교육을 통해 가족과의 관계 및 사회 참여도를 증진시켰고, 삶에 대한 자신감과 긍정적인 생각, 그리고 사회 일원으로서의 역할 등 생활 전반에서 있어서 바람직한 방향으로 변화되었다.
