The purpose of this study was to investigate lifelong learning experiences which affected the settlement process of North Korean mid-aged female refugees throughout adaptation period after they landed in South Korea. It was fully discussed what kinds of lifelong learning were experienced by the refugees and how the experiences led to changes in their lives. The five participants, North Korean mid-aged female refugees between the age of 35 and 55, were selected by snowball sampling. Their interviews were analyzed using a qualitative method after in-depth interview to find out differences and similarities in their lifelong learning experiences. The results showed that North Korean mid-aged female refugees took compulsory education at one of resettlement centers, Hanawon. The education provided them with training to nurture positive attitudes, self-development and competence in succeeding in South Korea. The learning experiences helped the refugees to lay the foundations to live and anticipate their second blossoming in South Korea. Moreover, the learning experiences fulfilled their passion and thirst for learning, and strong will for not handing down poverty and surrender to inequality to their children. The findings presents that some psychological efforts are required for the participants to promote their social competence and independence: positive attitude and self-image, desire for learning and new life, and determination for not handing down their current situation.

본 연구의 목적은 북한을 이탈한 중년여성이 남한에 입국하여 사회에 적응하기까지 정착과정에 영향을 미친 평생학습 경험을 발견하기 위한 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 북한이탈 중년여성이 남한 정착과정에서 어떤 평생학습을 경험하였으며 그로 인해 평생학습이 그들의 삶에 어떤 변화를 가져왔는가에 대한 연구문제를 설정하였다. 연구대상은 북한을 이탈하여 남한에 정착한 35세에서 55세 사이의 중년여성이었으며, 눈덩이표집으로 선정된 연구 참여자 5명의 사례를 소수 질적 연구방법인 심층면접법으로 분석하였다. 분석에서는 북한이탈 중년여성이 경험한 평생학습의 차이점과 공통점을 찾아보았다. 연구 결과 북한이탈 중년여성들은 북한이탈 주민 정착지원 시설인 하나원에서 의무교육을 받았으며, 배움과 권력, 가난과 부의 대물림에서 벗어나 생계를 유지하기 위해 긍정의 힘을 발휘하는 학습, 배움의 갈증을 해소하고 자기개발을 위해 열정을 다하는 학습, 남한사회에서 성공하기 위해 스펙을 갖추는 학습을 하였다. 이들이 경험한 평생학습은 긍정의 힘, 배움의 갈증, 대물림, 이미지 관리, 인생의 꽃을 피우기 위한 힘을 발휘한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 과정에서 북한이탈 중년여성이 경험한 학습은 대한민국 국민으로서 남한사회에서 살아갈 수 있는 토대가 되었고, 정착과정에서 사회구성원의 역량을 갖추기 위한 디딤돌이 되었다.
