The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of group art therapy on the mental health of demented elderly. The design of the study was pretest-posttest research design. The subjects were 30 dementia sufferers who were hospitalized at a T dementia center located in Daegu. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: 14 control group and 16 experimental group.
A program comprised of 24 sessions group art therapy was administered to both groups for 3 months, beginning of January, 2002. The evaluating tools for the present study was SCL-90-R (Symptom Checklist-90-Revision) test. Chi-square test and Independent Samples t-test were employed for statistical analyses.
The study explored the following research questions.
1. What aspects of qualitative change will brought up by group art therapy for the mental health of demented elderly?
2. What effects does the group art therapy program have on total mental health of demented elderly?
3. What does the effects of the group art therapy program on subordinate factors of mental health of demented elderly?
The major findings of the present study can be summarized as follows;
1. With respect to qualitative aspects, the demented elderly pleasantly participated in the art actives with revealing their experiences more freely, improved their interpersonal relationships, and more laughed, talked.
Especially mental health of levels of somatization, anxiety, depression and psychoticism were decreased by art therapy activities
2. Group art therapy resulted in the increment of mental health of demented elderly. The score of SCL-90-R was significantly decreased through the group art therapy at 0.05 level.
3. After group art therapy, the effects on subordinate factors in mental health of mental health of demented elderly were decrease scores of somatization, anxiety, depression and psychoticism. However, there was no significant difference in obsessive-compulsive reaction, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, phobia and paranoia.
In short, the group art therapy program employed in this study seemed to be profitable effects on the mental health of old men with dementia.

본 연구는 집단미술치료 프로그램을 실시하여 치매노인의 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다.
연구 대상은 대구 시내의 T 치매센터에서 입소해 있는 노인의 대상으로 주2회 60분으로 총24회기를 실시하였다.
실험집단 16명과 비교집단 14명으로 사전 사후 검사로 간이정신진단검사(SCL-90-R) 90문항을 실시하였으며 점수 차이를 t검증으로 검증하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 치료과정에 따라 치매노인의 정신건강에 미치는 효과가 있었다.
둘째, 집단미술치료 프로그램이 치매노인의 전반적인 정신건강에 미치는 효과가 있었다.
셋째, 집단미술치료 프로그램이 치매노인의 정신건강의 하위요인에 미치는 효과가 있었다.
이상의 연구결과를 통하여 집단미술치료 프로그램이 치매노인의 정신건강에 미치는 효과가 있었음을 알 수 있었다.
