The purpose of the study is to find out the ways in which school-to-work transition can take place successfully. It is based on the premise that a successful transition from school to work enhances an individual's job competency and work-place adaptability, and eventually allows a nation to secure skilled workforce. For this purpose, the study tried to find out the implication of Australia's case for reform of school-to-work transition, given that it is one of the best countries in terms of vocational education and training. First of all, this study reviewed Australia's vocational education and training system. Secondly, the main components of school-to-work transition and pathways adopted in Australia were discussed. Thirdly, this study analyzed how the Australian Government is supporting school-to-work transition institutionally and what efforts the Government has made to make it work effectively. Based on the results of review and analysis of the Australian case, a review of the modalities of school-to-work transition in Korea was made to see whether they are working properly or not. In sum, this study provides the following suggestions for successful operation of school-to-work transition measures; a) Vocational education and training system should be implemented with the integration of vocational education and vocational training for effectiveness and efficiency; b) Qualifications system needs to be reorganized to promote school-to-work transition; c) Collaborative relationship between school and industry needs to be strengthened; and d) The school-to-work programs needs to be operated in a user-oriented manner.

본 논문은 개인의 학교-직업세계 이행의 성공이 개인의 직무능력 향상, 현장 적응력 제고뿐만 아니라 궁극적으로 국가 차원의 우수한 노동인력 확보를 좌우하는 중요한 사안임에도 불구하고, 학교와 직업세계의 현장에서 실제로 성공적인 이행이 이루어지지 않는다는 현실에서 출발하였다. 직업교육훈련의 강국이라 할 수 있는 호주의 사례를 통하여 우리나라의 학교-직업세계 이행을 둘러싼 호주의 개혁 노력이 우리나라의 학교-직업세계 이행 현실에 주는 시사점을 찾고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 호주의 직업교육훈련체계를 개관해 보았다. 또 학교-직업세계 이행의 구성 요소를 살펴본 후 호주에서 학교-직업세계로의 이행 경로들을 파악해 보았다. 호주에는 학교-직업세계 이행을 위한 어떠한 지원체제가 있으며, 또 이들을 효과적으로 작동시키기 위하여 어떠한 개선 노력을 해 왔는지 분석하였다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 우리나라의 학교-직업세계 이행의 실천 방법이 성공적으로 작동되는지 살펴보고, 우리나라에서 학교-직업세계 이행이 성공하기 위하여 참고하여야 할 시사점을 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 직업교육훈련체제가 교육과 훈련의 통합적 접근으로 이루어져야 한다. 둘째, 학교-직업세계 이행이 원활하게 이루어질 수 있도록 자격제도의 재구축이 필요하다. 셋째, 산업계와 학교의 체계적인 협력관계가 구축되어야 한다. 넷째, 수요자 중심의 학교-직업세계 프로그램 운영이 필요하다.
