The defense industry, supplying or developing defense articles which are needed to maintain and improve nation's military power, is a cutting-edge industry integrating technical accomplishments of the era. South Korea lags behind other leadingnations in terms of the defense science and technology.
Industrial basis for defense companies, especially small and medium enterprises, is poor, compared to other manufacturing industries. Recognizing that nations will focus on high-end technology to survive the future battlefield, DAPA came up with defense R&D strategies which include goal-oriented R&D, setting up of defense R&D implementation system, sophistication of project management methods, promotion of defense export, and strengthening of international defensetechnology cooperation. For the effective implementation of defense R&D policy, Small and medium enterprises, which possess excellent defense technologies, should play a key role. Therefore, DAPA is now promoting growth and participation of small and medium enterprises, enhancing technical and informational assistance, and supporting commercialization of defense technology and their marketing efforts.
