Bokyoung Park Christian women have been the major force of missionary endeavor throughout the history, yet, faced different levels of gender discrimination. One of the reason of such discrimination is because of culture-biased erroneous interpretation of the scripture. To provide a sound view on the relationship between men and women became essential element to encourage women’s fuller and better participation in world mission enterprise. In this paper, with such hope, the writer has attempted to identify the biblical view on the relationship between men and women. First, the study was conducted to examine the creation story in Genesis 1-2. The creation story of Genesis 1-2 shows the genuine equal and mutual relation between men and women. Although traditionalists strongly argues that women’s complementary role to men is designed by God based on their interpretation of the Genesis 2, as we carefully examine the creation story of Genesis 1-2, we conclude that their arguments is not firmly based on biblical evidence. So, refuting each arguments, the paper argues Genesis 2 also supports full equality between men and women. Furthermore, the study has identified the origin of patriarchy in the human history in Genesis 3 due to the Fall. But, unlike the traditionalists view, the paper insists that the patriarchy is not result of punishment by God but a simple description of future reality resulted by the Fall. Then, the study also examines how Jesus viewed women from various stories and teachings. The paper concluded that Jesus attitude toward women was totally different from that of Rabbi in Jewish tradition. Jesus freely talked to women; women were allowed to approach to Jesus, even touched him; Jesus healed women as well as men. Jesus treated women as subject with the dignity, and even allow women to be his followers and gave his teaching. And, finally, the study turned to its attention to Paul’s letter. Paul’s view on women can be found in Galatian 3:28; and it can be the core value of Paul’s teaching. Paul not only convinced the full equality of women and men, but also tried to practice according to this core teaching in his own life. As he tried to show the harmonious relationship between Jews and gentiles, second, united relationship between the free and the slaves, he also tried to excercise equal relationship between male and female. Such evidence of equality between male and female in Paul’s missionary work can be shown in his active cooperation with women workers for the sake of missionary endeavor.

기독교 역사 속에서 여성들은 세계 선교를 위하여 끊임없이 헌신하여 왔다. 그러나 이들이 경험하였던 성차별은 다양한 교회와 선교 현장에서 그 때나 지금이나 변함없이 지속되고 있다. 성차별 문화의 원인 중 하나가 잘못된 성경 해석으로 인한 가부장제의 정당화이다. 이 소고는 잘못된 성경 해석으로 인한 가부장제의 정당화를 극복하기 위해서 성경이 제공하는 남녀 관계를 규명하고자 시도하였다. 먼저 창세기 1-2장의 창조 이야기는 과거의 전통주의자들의 주장과는 달리 남녀의 평등성을 주장한다. 특히 창세기 2장의 내용에 근거해서 창조의 순서가 여성의 종속을 의미한다는 주장은 창조의 순서가 어떤 우선성을 보여 줄 수 없다. 또한 여성이 남성에게서 만들어졌기 때문에 여성이 남성에게 종속된다는 주장은 올바른 가부장적 문화에 근거한 해석이며, 오히려 여성만이 남성의 동반자라는 것을 강조하는 것이다. 셋째로 여성이 남성으로부터 이름을 지음받았기 때문에 남성의 리더십을 인정하는 주장은 잘못된 것인데, 창세기 2장 23절의 내용은 엄밀하게 살펴보면 남성의 여성에 대한 인식(Recognition)일 뿐이다. 넷째, 여성이 남성의 돕는 배필이라는 표현은 여성의 열등성을 말하는 것이 아니라 오히려 동등한 입장을 반영한다. 또 창세기 3장의 타락 이야기에서 형벌로서의 가부장제는 규범적인 것이라기보다는 미래 상황에 대한 단순한 묘사로 이해해야 한다. 남녀 관계에 대한 예수의 이해는 당시의 랍비의 이해와는 확연히 차이가 있었다. 예수는 당시의 랍비가 극도로 기피하였던 여성들과 자유롭게 대화하였고, 여성들이 예수께 다가오는 것을 허락하셨고, 남성과 함께 여성들의 육적, 정신적, 영적 고통을 치유하셨다. 예수는 또한 여성을 인격적이고 주체적인 존재로 대하셨다. 예수는 또 당시에는 금기로 인식되었던 여성을 향한 교육도 시도하셨다. 바울의 글에는 여성 차별적인 문구가 나타나는 것이 사실이지만, 바울의 글에는 남녀의 평등을 주장하는 내용이 존재한다. 이에 필자는 바울 신학의 핵심을 이루는 갈라디아서 3장 28절의 말씀을 분석하고, 그의 핵심 사상을 어떻게 바울이 실천해 냈었는지를 살펴보았다. 바울은 이방인과 유대인 간의 하나 됨을 강조하기 위해서 그의 선교 사역에서 이 확신을 실천하려고 노력하였고, 종과 자유자 간의 하나 됨을 위해서 이론뿐 아니라 선교 사역에서도 실천하였고, 동일하게 남성과 여성의 하나 됨을 위해서 바울은 이론뿐 아니라 실천을 통해서 그의 확신을 실천하였다. 그 결과 바울의 선교 사역에 여성들의 다양한 차원에서의 적극적인 참여는 갈라디아서 3장 28절을 그가 얼마나 중요한 원칙으로 삼았는지를 알 수 있다. 따라서 갈라디아서 3장 28절은
