The purpose of this study is to study Bang, Junghwan󰡑s childhood education idea and the significance of his childhood education idea in the view of holistic education which is the alternative paradigm of education for the modern society. Sopa Bang, Junghwan, as a pioneer of Korea󰡑s education, made a significant contribution to children󰡑s education in modern society by devoting himself to children󰡑s education and infant education. He formed his educational ideas based on the󰡐Donghak Revolution󰡑s󰡐Man is God󰡑idea that emphasizes respect for human beings and God󰡑s voice is man󰡑s voice. He established children󰡑s day in the basis of respect for man󰡑s life and dignity idea, put forth his strength to children󰡑s education by publishing the magazine called󰡐children󰡑, and made a great contribution to the change of the thoughts of Korean people who were so used to the Confucian culture which made them regard children as possessions of adults, and thus they could do anything they want. He also contributed a great deal to childhood education. In the view of holistic education which is the new alternative paradigm of modern education, he had a pioneering perception(understanding) in education that coincides with modern education. Sopa pursued whole-being education. Even though he didn󰡑t use the term󰡐whole-being education󰡑, he called it󰡐whole-activity󰡑. He emphasized art education as󰡐whole-being education󰡑. He had a conviction that one could become a better person by developing sensibility through art education. In this respect, Sopa Bang, Junghwan󰡑s childhood education idea is a pioneering education that doesn󰡑t fall behind modern childhood education ideas, and it suggests a lot to modern infant education of Korea.

이 논문의 목적은 소파 방정환의 아동교육론과 그의 아동교육론을 현대의 대안적 교육패러다임인 홀리스틱교육의 관점에서 연구하는 것이다. 소파 방정환은 우리나라 교육의 선구자로서 아동교육에 헌신하여 큰 공헌을 하였다. 그는 어린이의 목소리가 곧 하늘의 목소리라는 동학혁명의 인내천사상에 기초하여 인간존중의 교육사상을 실천하였다. 그는 인간존중사상을 바탕으로 1922년 어린이날을 제정하고, ‘어린이’라는 잡지를 통해서 아동교육에 힘썼으며, 전통적으로 아동을 어른의 소유물로만 여겨서 어른이 마음대로 해도 되는 것으로 생각한 유교문화에 익숙한 우리나라 사람들의 사고를 바꾸는 데 큰 기여를 하였다. 소파의 아동교육사상은 현대교육의 대안적 패러다임으로 인식되고 있는 홀리스틱교육의 10가지 교육원리와 기본방향에 부합하는 것을 발견하였다. 이러한 점에서 소파 방정환의 아동교육사상은 역사사회적인 면에서 보편성을 띠며, 아동의 전인성 등 현대 아동교육사상의 기조와 일치하는 선구적인 교육으로서 현대 아동교육에 많은 시사를 한다.
