This article aims to explore transformative learning from three different perspectives: rational, imaginative, and spiritual, comparing the work of Mezirow, Boyd & Myers, Dirkx, and Tremmel. This study takes the research methodological approach with a comparative analysis of transformative learning based on the literature review within the context of holistic education. Without advocating the supremacy of one mode of knowing over the other, this article attempts to argue that we need to disrupt and transcend our binary model of conceptualizing knowledge, learning, and life and find new ways that will incorporate both the rational and the extrarational. This article also examines mindfulness which is a new approach to transformative learning that has been gaining popularity in recent years in the field of psychology and health. This article suggests that the learning process embedded in mindfulness practice is both holistic and transformative, and thus conducive to transcending the limitations of ego-based education.

본고는 인식전환학습의 창시자인 Mezirow의 이성 중심적 이론에 대한 비판을 시작으로, Jung의 심층심리학을 바탕으로 한 Boyd & Myers 의 인식전환 교육, Dirkx의 영혼을 통한 학습, 그리고 Tremmel의 선(禪)적인 관점을 홀리스틱 교육의 맥락에서 비교 분석하였다. 인식전환학습을 합리적(rational)․상상적(imaginative), 그리고 영성적(spiritual) 관점으로 나누어 고찰하였으며 합리적 인식전환학습의 한계를 넘어 보다 홀리스틱한 학습으로 나가야 할 필연성을 논의하였다. 홀리스틱 인식전환학습을 위한 과제로서 Mezirow의 이성중심의 이론의 한계를 극복하는 한편, 최근 서구의 심리치료 현장에서 주목하고 있는 마음챙김(mindfulness)을 핵심 내용으로 하는 영성적인 접근의 필요성을 고찰하였다. 마음챙김에 내재된 학습과정이 홀리스틱한 동시에 전환적이기 때문에 자아중심에 기반한 현행교육의 한계를 극복하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다는 점이 강조되었고, 홀리스틱 교육과 인식전환학습이 전환(transformation)이라는 접점(interface)을 중심으로 논의되었다.
