Vertebrate remains, which have recently been excavated in various forms, have been investigated in terms of their location, context and associated artifacts. Their connection to human activity has therefore been demonstrated, and their presence has played an important role in understanding the nature of archaeological sites and features. This study reviewed previous research and cases of vertebrate findings from Korea and Japan, and then focused on shell midden sites and pits where livestock was intentionally buried in order to establish an ideal investigation methodology for retrieving animal remains. The investigators focused on the importance of thoroughly securing data from shell middens during fieldwork, including the vertebrate remains contained in each shell bed. Methods for the detection and collection of micro vertebrate remains, which are not easily distinguished with the naked eye, were discussed. Dry screening and wet screening techniques were described, along with sampling methods for shell midden sites. In the case of pits where livestock was intentionally buried, investigation methods and things to pay attention to during the investigation process were discussed. Finally, the study presented various methods of analysing these remains, which were based on the basic analytical process involving categorization, identification, observation and measurement. Ways to efficiently report the results of the analysis, using diverse tables and diagrams, were also discussed. The ultimate goal of the study is to make even the slightest contribution so that researchers in charge of fieldwork may effectively investigate archaeological sites and features yielding vertebrate remains.

최근 들어 다양한 형태로 출토되고 있는 척추동물유존체는 출토위치, 퇴적상황, 공반유물의 검토로부터 인간활동과의 관련성이 규명되거나 그 자체만으로 유적, 유구의 성격을 가늠하는데 있어서 중요한 역할을 담당하기도 한다. 본고는 이러한 척추동물유존체에 대해서 먼저 우리나라와 일본의 연구성과 및 조사 사례를 검토한 다음 패총유적 및 가축매납수혈유구를 주 대상으로 하여 조사연구법에 대해 살펴보았다. 현장조사법으로 패총의 경우는 각 패층에 포함되어 있는 척추동물유존체, 특히 육안으로 쉽게 선별이 되지 않는 미세척추동물유존체의 검출·수거방법 등을 포함하여 패총조사에 있어서 빠짐없는 자료확보에 주안점을 두고 건조 체질 선별법 및 수세체질 선별법과 샘플링 방법에 대해서, 가축매납수혈유구의 경우는 조사과정에 따른 조사방법 및 유의점 등에 대해 기술하였다. 마지막으로 분류와 동정, 관찰, 계측과 같은 일련의 과정으로 이루어지는 기초분석을 토대로 행해지는 여러 가지 분석방법과 더불어 다양한 표와 도면을 예로 제시하여 분석을 통하여 얻어진 결과를 효율적으로 보고서상에 기재하는 방법에 대해서 기술하였다. 결과적으로는 매장문화재 조사를 담당하는 각 연구자들이 척추동물유존체 출토유적·유구를 효과적인 방법으로 조사하는데 있어서 조금이나마 도움이 되고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 최종 목적이다.
