The purpose of this study is to inquire into the values of liberal democracy, to search for the defects in it, and to judge the probability of liberal democracy to build the happy human society. The liberal democracy is a political ideology from compromise of the liberalism and democracy. The subject of liberalism is the bourgeoisie, who accepts the demand for the democracy, and unites into liberal democracy. The fundamental idea of liberal democracy is the human-respect and the harmonic practice of liberty and equality. Then the liberalism makes the inequality and the democracy is exposed the inefficiency, and it went through the crisis of the maintenance or abolition. But the liberal democracy is based on the assent of the large mass of the people. and settles as a defined ruling format that is controled by the large mass of the people to achieve their respective liberty.

이 연구의 목적은 자유민주주의의 가치를 규명하면서, 그것의 결함을 찾아내고, 그럼에도 자유민주주의가 인류의 행복을 보장할 가망성이 있는가를 점검해 보는 데 있다. 자유민주주의는 자유주의와 민주주의의 타협의 결과 성립된 정치이념이다. 자유주의의 주체는 부르주아 계급인데 인민대중의 민주주의 요구를 받아들여 자유민주주의를 만들었다. 자유민주주의의 기본이념은 인간존중과 자유ㆍ평등의 조화로운 실행이다. 그런데 자유주의는 불평등을 낳고 민주주의는 비효율성을 드러내어서 존폐의 위기까지 겪었다. 그러나 자유민주주의는 권력의 민중적 기반을 확대시켜서 다수 국민의 동의에 의거하는 한편, 각자의 자유권을 확보하기 위해서 국민에 의한 권력의 통제를 기도하는 통치형태로 정착하였다. 인류는 오늘날까지 온갖 정치적 경험을 겪어오는 가운데서 자유민주주의야말로 권력에 내재하는 결점을 가장 잘 보완하여 모든 국민의 인간적 성장과 복지의 실현에 가장 많은 공헌을 할 수 있다는 결론을 내린 것이다.
