This study was to examine changes in college students’ knowledge and attitude toward the Aged after the beauty volunteer program for the elderly. A beauty volunteer program for 202 seniors aged over 65 years who lived in Jeong-eup rural area was conducted once a week for
four months from July 11 to November 21 in 2009. It consists of hair cut, permanent wave, hair coloring, foot and leg massage. For this study, college students who are majoring in beauty arts were divided into two groups according to the participation of the beauty volunteer activity: the experiment group (N=30), and the control group (N=30). Their knowledge towards the elderly were measured by the FAQ1 revised by Yang et al. The attitudes towards the elderly were examined by the semantic differential scale developed by Sanders et al. The results of this study were as follows: 1) There was no differences about the student’s knowledge toward elderly after the beauty volunteer program between the experiment and control groups. 2)The experiment group was significantly more positive attitudes toward the elderly after the beauty volunteer program. However, the control group was not significantly different in their attitudes toward the elderly before and after the beauty volunteer program. These results suggest that the beauty volunteer program for the elderly is to improve college students’ attitudes toward the elderly.
