- Although the Gyeongju Donggyeong(GD) dogs were the longest history and the most accumulative literatures among those of native dog breeds, the dog breed temporarily became an endangered species due to the lack of scientific management and interests. Furthermore, the dog breed is becoming a mongrel because of inbreeding and crossbreeding. This reasearch was focused on studying the historical origin and setting classification criteria for Dog Breed Standards of the GD dogs in order to provide the necessary information for designation as a national treasure. A survey of radiographic evaluations among 73 dogs (Male 24, Female 34) in GD dogs was performed from 2006 to September 2009. The short tailed or tailless GD dogs were 5-9 and 1-4 joints of coccygeal vertebrae, respectively. The sacral consisted of 3 united sacral vertebrae, resulting in sacralization, and most coccygeal vertebrae in the tailless GD dogs are united, while those in the short tailed dogs had thin and disappearing distinctive conformation as they go the end.
