With an increase in adolescent pregnancy, premarital sex is becoming an issue of concern to parents, educators, policy makers and society. Due to their cultural background and values, Korean American parents have a more difficult time discussing the issue than their American counterparts. As a result, conversations do not take place until it is too late, sometimes followed by unwanted and unexpected pregnancies. This study attempts to explore the effects of intergenerational conversation styles on sexual socialization among college ‐aged second‐generation Korean Americans, while focusing on the respondent’s opinion formation about
sexual intercourse with significant others and one‐night stands (casual sex partners) and their actual sex behaviors. An analysis of 199 college students of Korean ancestry in the Los Angeles area reveal that parental conversation styles are as effective as the content of conversation in shaping the respondent’s opinion and behavior. It also shows that different conversation styles
have different effects across different types of sex activities.

미국에서 나날이 증가하는 청소년 임신 사례는 부모, 교육자, 정책 입안자 및 전 사회에 청소년 혼전 성관계 문제의 중요성을 일깨워 주고 있음에도 불구하고, 문화적 배경과 가치관의 차이로 인하여 재미 한인 제1세대는 이러한 문제를 자녀들과 허심탄회하게 의논하는데 많은 어려움을 직면하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 재미 한인 제1세대와 제2세대 간의 대화는 혼전 성관계에 따른 제반 문제가 발생한 이후에나 이루어지는 형편이다. 이에 본 논문은 재미 한인 이민 1세대 어머니의 자녀 양육 방식이, 제2세대 자녀들이 지니고 있는 연인 관계 이성과의 성 행위 및 낮선 이성과의 일회성 성 행위에 대한 생각과 행동에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 본 연구에 참가한 199명의 로스앤젤레스 지역 소재 한인 대학생에 대한 설문 조사 결과는, 제2세대 자녀의성 의식 및 행동은 세대 간 대화를 통해 전이되는 부모의 가치관 내용 (content)만이 아니라, 세대 간 대화 방식(conversation styles)에 상당한 영향을 받고 있음을 경험적으
로 밝힌다. 또한, 한 형태의 대화 방식이 만병 통치약인양 모든 경우에 통용되는 것이 아니라, 혼전 성 관계의 유형에 따라 다른 형태의 대화 방식이 더 효과적일 수 있음을 보여 줌으로써, 상이한 문화와 가치관이 혼재하는 이민 가정에서 제2세대 자녀에 대한 보다 효과적인 성 교육을 위한 자녀 양육 방식을 제시한다.
