The purpose of this study is to look into Keokmongyokeol by the view point of the modern moral education.
By judging from a modern ethics, Keokmongyokeol's ethics comes under the classification as follows. Firstly, Keokmongyokeol's ethics is a teleology, for an ideal character building is kept as the first aim of life. Secondly, its ethics is a metaphysical ethics, for it is based on Yigi theory. Thirdly, its ethics is a virtue ethics, for it is based on a person of good character and virtues.
Looking into Keokmongyokeol's ethics by the view point of modern moral education, we know those as follows. Keokmongyokeol pursues the moral socialization that is internalizing the existing norms and order. And it goes the way integrating cognition, emotion, and activity. Also it presents Yip-Chi, Geogyeonggungri, Yeokhang etc. as teaching methods.
It is obvious that Yulgok and his thought is great. But in order to be a convincing theory, the answers to some questions are supplemented: Is the aim of learning an ideal character building? Could be a rational explanation for the ideas like Yigi, Gungri etc.?

본 연구의 목적은 율곡의『격몽요결』을 현대 도덕 교육적 입장에서 고찰해 보는 것이다. 조선시대의 초등 도덕 교과서에 해당하는『격몽요결』을 구미(歐美)의 윤리학적 관점에서 보면, 삶의 목적을 도덕적 완성에 둔 다는 점에서 목적론적 윤리설로 볼 수 있고, 윤리의 근거를 이기론(理氣論)에 두고 있다는 점에서 형이상학적 윤리설에 해당된다. 그리고 인격자를 강조한 다는 점에서 덕(德) 윤리학에 해당되며, 욕구의 억제를 강조한다는 점에서 금욕주의적 윤리에 해당된다고 할 수 있다.
『격몽요결』을 현대의 도덕 교육적 관점에서 보면, 교육의 기본 성격은 기존의 규범과 질서를 내면화 하는 도덕적 사회화이며, 인지와 정서 행동이 통합된 인격 형성을 목표로 하고 있으며, 입지(立志), 궁리(窮理), 거경(居敬), 역행(力行) 등을 방법으로 제시하고 있다.
율곡과 그의 사상이 위대한 것은 분명하지만 오늘날에도 설득력을 갖기 위해서는 몇가지의 중요한 질문들에 답해야 한다. 학문의 목적을 성인으로 할 수 있는 지, 가족주의적 촌락 공동체에서의 유덕함이 오늘날에도 유효한 지, 이기론(理氣論)이나 거경궁리(居敬窮理) 등은 합리적인 설명이 가능한 지 등에 대하여 충분한 해답이 선행되어야 한다.
『격몽요결』이 담고 있는 윤리적 요소가 오늘날 도덕 교육에서 영향력을 발휘하기 위해서는 현대 사회에 맞는 창조적 변용이 있어야 한다.
