The purpose of this study is to clear that ethics of principle has properties of virtue ethics through Mill's Utilitarianism based on ethics of principle emphasizing dignity of people and character. The fact that Mill's Utilitarianism emphasizing character and dignity of people plainly shows properties of virtue ethics. This means that moral education based on ethics of principle is limited and necessary to approach with virtue ethics. in other words, ethics of principle and virtue ethics don't conflict each other but mutual supplementation in relation. As universal moral principle is abstract, we need to internalize universal moral principle to realize it in our life. The state that internalizing universal moral principle equals to the state of having virtues. It is essential to approach of virtue education to internalize universal moral principle. Finally, the study shows that It is important to approach with moral education in virtue education focusing on principle.

본 연구의 목적은 원리 중심의 윤리를 강조하는 밀의 공리주의가 인간의 품위나 성격을 강조한다는 것을 통해 원리 중심의 윤리에도 덕 윤리적 특성이 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 공리주의가 인간의 인격이나 품위를 강조한다는 사실은 덕 윤리적 특성을 지니고 있다는 것을 명확하게 보여주는 것이다. 이는 원리의 윤리에 근거한 도덕교육이 그 자체로는 한계가 있으며, 도덕교육을 위해서는 덕 윤리적 접근이 필요하다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 다시 말해, 이는 원리 중심의 윤리와 덕 중심의 윤리가 대립하는 것이 아니라, 상호 보완적인 관계에 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 보편적인 도덕원리는 추상적이므로, 원리의 윤리가 삶에서 제대로 실현되기 위해서는 그러한 원리를 내면화 하는 것이 필요하다. 보편적인 도덕원리를 내면화 한 상태를 인격이나 덕을 갖춘 상태라 할 수 있다. 따라서 보편적인 도덕원리를 내면화하도록 하기 위해서는 덕교육적 접근이 필요한 것이다. 이것은 보편적인 원리를 중심으로 하는 도덕교육에서도 덕 교육적 접근이 중요하다는 것을 보여주는 것이다.
