The purpose of this study was to investigate the functions of drinking tea in China from ancients times to Tang Dynasty. The previous studies mostly resorted to the Chajing茶經(the Classic of Tea) by Luk Yu(陸羽) in studying the culture of drinking tea. By making active use of the Ershiwushi (Twenty-five Official dynastic histories二十五史), this study took efforts to examine the figures cited in the Chajing as well as the ones appearing in it. Thus it was able to add more tea figures such as Wang Po, Gwak Uigong, Do Jam, Wang Mong, Bae Yeon, Sang Geo, Yu Ui-gyeong, Im Bang, Yu Ho, Yang Hyeon-ji, Shim Deok-wi, and Mun Je. And the expanded scope of the data facilitated the efforts to examine the functions of drinking tea among them. The functions of drinking tea can be summarized by the periods as follows: First, the remaining records only say that Shin Nong used tea for medical purposes in ancient times. Although the amount of records didn't increase much in Chou and Ch'in Dynasty, it's estimated that the purposes of tea changed from medicine to food. Second, the later Han Dynasty saw the big emergence of Cheongdam philosophers including those pursuing the Shinseon ideology and the active progress of ideologies. The Cheongdam philosophers and Shinseon ideologists had huge intentions to turn their ideas into reality through tea, which suggests that they must have tried to expand individual tea life into social tea life. As a result, tea must have been used at all kinds of festivals, sacrificial rites, and religious services, and there are many records to prove that. Of course, they used tea for medical purposes and as food in daily life like the previous periods. Third, the period of Wei Jin witnessed the most records about those who drank tea, which must have exercised huge influences on the solid establishment of Taoist Philosophy and Shinseon ideology. Those thinkers created Danyak, an extreme medical life involving tea, which suggests the possibility of Dado usage. Tea was put to active uses including assisting individual mental cultivation and playing a role in social festivals and sacrificial rites. The period was active in literary terms and produced a considerable amount of literary works about tea. And fourth, the culture of drinking tea during the Northern and Southern Dynasties was not much different from that of the Wei Jin period. In short, tea was used in all kinds of festivals and sacrificial rites socially and for medial purposes, food, and mental cultivation individually.
